That is very cool. Have you ever told him about that? What did he think?
Yeah, let's keep talking about Sean. Maybe the news will pick up as it gets closer for the new cd.

No, because I was so star struck the only thing that I could spit out is that I had come 1000 miles to see him perform. He really liked that.:D

I know what you mean about being star struck. When I met him I was so star struck that I couldn't say anything. All I could think about was getting a picture! And in my head I have a million things I wanted to ask him and talk to him about, but I completely froze. It was definately one of the most surreal expierences in my life. But I know...I know...they are just real people just like us.

The best part about them is that they are so down to earth like most of us. They are extremely genuine.

They are down to earth. They have said before that meeting fans and people wanting to get their autograph is just as surreal as us meeting them. That definately reminds me that they are real people. I kind of feel weird wanting their autograph and pictures with them and wanting to talk to them so much...because they are just normal people. More normal than most musicans anyways.

i did get the whole they are normal people too thing down the first time i met them, but it was only for the grace of the conversations being easy to find. Sara and i talked about whether or not Mindy Smith was good (cause she was not playing at our concert though the tickets said she was) and the difference in her live music and her CDs.
Chris made fun of me for being freezing cold in the middle of the street because i claimed i was in the middle of a wind tunnel... and i probably was but who knows? he found it funny that that was my excuse.
but Sean was particularly hilarious and he and my friend, who are of about equal height and shorter than me, argued me as to whether height was essential or not, until my friend got hit in the head by the bus side mirror when someone opened the door, and i said were she taller she would have seen it coming. so they conceeded.
but yeah, if the conversations had not so easily come... my somtach was in butterflies entirely the whole time.

That sounds so cool. I wish I could have talked to them about that kind of fun stuff. I can't believe you actually got Sean to talk! When I met him, my heart stopped and I forgot to breathe. But I was so tongue-tied that I couldn't even find a conversation starter or join in on another conversation. I was so scared. I guess it comes from a deep seated fear that happened when I got to see a taping of the Mickey Mouse Club when I was little and I tried to talk to Justin Timberlake and he gave me a dirty look...ever since then I have been scared to talk to people like that....and I have also never liked Justin Timberlake because of that.

ew, JT dirty looked you? i totally would write it up in a big dramatic form and mail it to a Rag paper. you could get some money for a story about what a jerk he was even as a kid.
back on topic... next time, go in with something weird to say. then just randomly say it. that seems to be the easy way to open conversations with ANYONE, it automatically throws them off as much as you. not too weird though, my brother opened the conversation with Sara about Mindy Smith by saying Sara, did Mindy's stint with ya'll run out? cause if the venue folks knew she wasn't playing, they could've told us... or did ya'll run her off being hyper or something? she was so thrown by the real question, she had to take a minute or two to answer it, slowly and inviting more strings of conversation to the table.
and Sean, that was a mistake. i stupidly lost my friend in the throng and made a crack about her being Hobbit-sized (she's NOT that short) when she magically appeared at my elbow. he chimed in to her defense. conversation ensued.
yeah so you do not need a plan, just try to have no intention of telling them a list of things, and you end up really conversing like normally.
i use that for talking to random political candidates during election times. to see if they have no sense of humour. (like when i was handing out flyers for a performance of Dracula and a State Senate candidate asked me if it was a play and i said no sir, Dracula is running for State Senate, he didn't laugh, i didn't vote for him.)
so yeah, that's my trick for talking to anyone. that way, if it does not work, you can bail easily, cause you weren't talking to them in the first place. :)

one show i was at chris mentioned his mom reading the politically correct fairy tales to him as a kid, and i was gonna ask him what the politically correct version of the fox was, but i never got a chance. :(

Yeah, I was thinking of filing a lawsuit. I could claim all of my social anxiety problems are his fault...because you know...everything is his fault...including the whole Janet Jackson thing...hahaha.
Back on topic. Thanks for the tips on how to talk to them. I really would like to ask them, or Chris atleast, why he doesn't like television, and then introduce him to some amazing shows that I know he would like...[cough] Lost [cough]

One of the funniest and most memorable conversations I had with the group was when I saw the MAS play at the Birchmere last year. I handed a copy of my Acoustic Guitar magazine with the 3 of them on the cover to be autographed by Sara. When I handed it to her, I said Can you sign it, Yes, I will marry you! ?
She just blankly stared at me for about 20 seconds, not knowing what to say or do. She then looked down at the magazine and as she was signing it she said, I hope you can read this.
I got it back thinking she was going to write something like you creep, get away from me or something, but instead she wrote,
Where is the Ring??. One of those great moments in my life.
My friend suggested that the next time I see her, I should bring a fake ring as like a running joke thing and see if she would remember me and the statement or not.

ah yes, i imagine that would be a highlight of your life. i can't refute that one at all.
and look at Sara, being all quick thinking on her feet. that's a girl!:D
sooo tomorrow is Sean's birthday... YAY SEAN!! [party]
i really just needed an excuse to use the party smiley, its so hard to find good reasons.

That's a cool story :D
I have one similar, but a tad different.
I went to Bumpershoot to see NC a while back, and there was a band there on the side of the walkway, and I stopped to jam... and I asked him to play something that he especially liked, and he did. Then he asked me to play something I liked, so I played Bombadil.... what I didn't know was that Sara Watkins was standing behind me the whole time!!
That's my claim to fame.

Thilefan what do you play and for how long??

I've played mandolin for about 9 years. I bought a guitar about 3 months ago, too. I find that the two complement each-other, and that it is easier to play mandolin now that I play guitar, and visa-versa. What do you play?

I play guitar. I have been playing for 9 years now. I'm not even close to where Sean is at, but I consider myself pretty good, considering he is amazing. I play occasionally for my church's worship group and I'm also the music director in my church's youth ministry.

Speaking of birthdays, I remember when I was a sophomore in college and first discovered Nickel Creek. I had a major celeb crush on Sean ('cos who wouldn't?) and I remember thinking in dismay, Oh man, he's 24-that's old, he has to have a girlfriend (ha ha-as if he would meet me and fall in love with me-good times, good times ). Now I'm 24-I don't know why, but it feels weird. Feels so much older than 23. Don't worry, I don't still think I might have a chance with guys I don't know. :-)
