Hi there. I'm new so um, I'm just trying to introduce myself. Where did you first learn of NC?

Austin City Limits. We don't get much country or bluegrass here, unfortunately.

A friend saw the When You Come Back Down video while driving across the country in November, 2000. He found the tune on Napster, played it for me, and I was immediately hooked, so I bought the CD, must have gotten one of the last of the Here to There CDs from their website, and managed to miss their show in Asheville by a week when moving from there, and then miss their show in Berkeley by a week on the other end... finally saw them in, I think, April or May of 2001 in a TINY coffeehouse (seats about 80) in San Jose.

So here's a rare, documented example of where Napster actually created record sales and at least one new fan :)

Let's see....my first exposure to Nickel Creek...I saw the video for 'When You Come Back Down' on CMT. I was sick, at home, missing the first few weeks of my freshmen year in high school, and barfing my brains out. I couldn't manage getting to the store to buy the record, so I gathered all my strength and burned the CD. (I know.....I know...bad Audrey...shame on me....). But now I'm in love! So it was a good thing. [noise]

I first heard of them when I saw their video for Reasons Why on CMT. I eventually bought the CD and the more I listened to it the more I liked it, until I eventually fell in love with it, and now there is no turning back for me. I am hooked on their music.

Anyhow, I know what you mean about bluegrass being hard to find. I have had to order many of my CDs because they are not carried in many stores at all. And, around here, you can just forget about hearing music like NCs on the radio.

I first saw them on Dolly Parton's video Shine, then heard about them through following Alison Krauss's career. I bought the album and then saw them in concert in April. The rest is history. Looking forward to the new album.

I'm just joining this message board. I first heard Nickel Creek as a group in September 1994 at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival (aka Winfield, KS). Actually heard Chris when he won the Mando contest at Winfield in 1993.

Anyway, I just came to this board because I've been digitizing old cassette tapes, and a proud thing is Nickel Creek's cassette tape that my family bought, either in 94 or 95. Autographed, no less. Collectors item? I assume others have this, but the songs were..

1. Tracks
2. You Don't Have to Move That Mountain
3. Driving on Empty
4. Press On
5. From Now On
6. My Little Girl in Tennessee.

Anyway... now I have a CD burned so I can play it to my heart's content without losing an heirloom. :)

I would personally argue that Napster/ WinMX boosts record sales to a huge degree mate, that's what got me into half the bands I own records by. Anyway, that's where I first heard when you come back down, but I only really looked into them cause I thought the name was cool, sara was cute, and bob harris kept whispering about them (lol). But now we're here it doesn't matter how we arrived!

yeah i really liked napster!! it let me hear bands that were never heard of in the US also. its one if the reasons why i found some of the bands that i listen to today. i agree with it on a level to where you find new music and still support the artist though

I agree. I think Napster, KaZaA, etc. are great to let people hear new music, but if you really like it you should go out and buy the actual album! Plus, burnt cds are just not the same as real ones, to me at least!
