So those are a few highlights from the Columbia, MO from Friday night (6/28)

I have not posted this yet because I don't touch the computer on weekends, well it's Monday and here goes a little review of the show.

Overall it was a fantastic show, I have seen the band several times, but this show truly tops the list. As far a setlist goes they pretty much did everything off of the album, the only one I can think that they did not do was Out of the Woods.

As far as new songs, they did Locking Doors, which I did not like at all, This Side, House Carpenter, and a few others that I can't remember.

They closed the show with Ode to a Butterfly -> Taxman -> Ode to a Butterfly it was quite impressive.

Encore was the typical Fox -> Subterreran Homesick Blues -> Fox. Even though I assumed this was coming it totally rocked. I know this song is fast, but they played it super fast, the crowd was going crazy.

By far the biggest highlight of the evening was the second encore. After coming back out they all unplugged their instrument and walked up to the very edge of the stage an Chris proceeded to tell us If you know this song feel free to sing along and right there from the edge of the stage with no mics, no speakers no nothing, just hollow instruments, and pure voices they did When You Come Back Down. Which segued into a group sing-a-long with the audience. Very, very cool. After this Sara sang a hymn, I have no idea what it was called, but you could imagine it was beautiful.

Now about Chris' mandolin, I am sure he several, but one of his Dudenbostel's was broken. The headstock was broken off the same was Mr. Monroe's Loar was broken. Does anybody know what happened?

One last thing. They did an amazing instrumental that had a serious celtic feel to it. It started with just Sara and Sean, and then Sara and Chris, then the whole band. It seemed to be very impromptu. Does anyone know if this was just a jam or maybe a forthcoming instrumental?

Well I hope you enjoyed reading this, because I certainly enjoyed living it.

You don't like Locking Doors? That's one of my favorite new songs of theirs! Anyway, it sounds like that was one awesome show! *But then again, if it's Nickel Creek, we KNOW it's gonna rock!

Thanks for posting that review, even though it just made me envious that I wasn't there! :-)

Thanks for such a great post! Sounds like that was a fantastic show! I wish I could have been there. I would have loved that second encore. The hymn Sara sang was probably Be Thou My Vision because various posts before have mentioned them doing that one in the last encore. I love that hymn and I bet it sounds absolutely beautiful when Sara sings it.

I think I read somewhere, some time ago, that Chris broke one of his mandolins when he dropped it. He picked up the case thinking it was locked but it wasn't and it dropped out or something like that. I could be completely wrong though; it's been a while since I heard about that.[think har

i went to a NC concert a couple weeks ago and they did two encores, just like the ones you talked about. i think it was in the first encore that they played the Mario Bros. song, but that might have been sooner. they said the hymn was 'Be Thou My Vision' but i think it's an older one since i couldn't find it in my church's hymnal. :( the one instrumental with Chris -->sean to Sara--> Chris is one from Chris's cd Not all who wander are lost called Big Sam Thompson and i can hardly stop listening to that song! I heard the Taxman and Locking Doors. i thought Locking Doors was ok but my dad didnt really like it tho.

They did that at the Ravinia concert too - Chris went so fast I don't know how he got in a breath. Is the Subterreran Homesick Blues thing that rap of sorts that he does in performance when he does the fox just before the last verse/chorus? He added it in at Ravinia, and on Austin City Limits. I have no idea what he's saying. :)

Yeah, Subterreran Homesick Blues is the song that they play in the middle of The Fox, the one Chris kind of raps. This is actually a Bob Dylan song. If you enjoy it I encourage you seek out the original.
