In addition to headlining a big Kentucky Derby Eve concert tonight at Louisville's International Convention Center (other performers are Shannon Lawson, the Del McCoury Band, and Sam Bush), NC will be performing live in the studio auditorium of WFPK, one of Louisville's public radio stations, at 12 pm (it's a weekly live music show called Live Lunch.
If you're close enough to pick it up, you can listen at 91.9 FM. Otherwise, you can stream live audio at www.wfpk.org.

Live Lunch performances are archived at that web address as well, so if you miss it today you can check it out when they post it in the Live Lunch archive page.

It's a one hour showcase. I believe Shannon Lawson will be at Live Lunch as well, so my guess is they'll each have about a half hour on air.

That sounds awesome. I wish we had a public radio station that would do that. Wishing I was in Louisville right now.

It's on the archive now.... I'm listening to it. [noise]

You have to listen to 30 mins of Shannon Lawson before you can listen to NC, at least when I tried to fast forward it kept starting over.

So far they've played old songs (Smoothie and Reasons), but it's great because I've been dying to hear something new... all my shows are getting sorta old.

It was incredible to be there live. My friend and I were in the third row of a studio that holds room for 75 people, tops. It was like sitting in your den, listening to Nickel Creek play some tunes for you.
They did one instrumental off of the soon-to-be-released album -- Scotch and Chocolate. They also did a great cover of a Randy Newman song. The rest were songs from their previous two albums. Make sure you check it out on the Live Lunch Archive section of www.wfpk.org.
And yeah, you'll have to listen to 30 minutes of Shannon Lawson first, who is part of the MusicMafia. He knows how to turn a good phrase, though -- he has some good novelty songs.

Can't wait till the big show tonight -- but according to the local paper, each of the four acts will play about an hour. Only one hour of Nickel Creek! Oh well ... you can't have everything. But this has been a cool experience already.

Oooo thanks for posting the link! I've listened to it twice already :P That's the first time I ever got to hear Scotch and Chocolate! I really like it. That was a nice treat.

Hee I just love listening to their banter between songs...sometimes that's my favorite part of the show.

I was really impressed by House Carpenter. They obviously have been practicing it. It's amazing (not that it wasn't before), but it's really really good, especially with Sara's harmonies. And did they take out the first section from Scotch and Chocolate? Or did I miss it?

I didn't get to hear the radio show, but I was at the concert Friday night and it was absolutely great. They played a lot of classic Nickel Creek songs like Ode to A Butterfly, Reasons Why, and Smoothie Song. They also played Brand New Sidewalk and House Carpenter, neither of which I had ever heard live before. The only bad thing is, this rather drunk lady who was in town for the Ky Derby sat beside my boyfriend and I and kept asking all kinds of questions during the concert and actually started eating popcorn out of our bucket. She had never heard Nickel Creek before and at one point she turned to us and said This is awesome! They're like a rock band with a mandolin! It made for a more interesting expierance.

We were sitting next to a HUGE Creek (and Thile) fan. She was so excited, a couple times I thought the rapture was taking place, and she was starting to rise. My feet were still earthbound so I was thinking that perhaps I should have been a better Christian all these years, but then I realized she was just reacting to the music. Whew.

Thile was definitely rocking -- he broke strings on three different songs.

In addition to the afore-mentioned (and other) songs from their previous albums, they did a Radiohead song (can't remember the title but it was from the Bends album, Trouble, and Helter Skelter (inserted in the midst of The Fox).

I also have to say that Shannon Lawson has an awesome live voice. And as an old Sam Bush fan who has nevertheless never seen him in person, I was in heaven. Sam and the boys put on a really fun set.

The only bad thing was that NC couldn't stay for the all-out jam at the end because they had to make a show in Minneapolis the next day. No time even for an encore -- they had to high-tail it out immediately after their set.

From this page:
WFPK Broadband Archive (http://216.24.56.185:8080/WFPK%27s%20Live%20Lunch%20for%20Broadband%20Users/)
You can right-click on May 6, 2005 and Copy Shortcut. Then paste that into your browser and delete the .m3u from the end and hit return. The MP3 can then be saved to your computer. Then you can scroll through that all you like. Or you can even edit the MP3 to get rid of Shannon and the bumper music at the end to end up with only the 29min of actual Nickel Creek performance. You can use this free program to edit the MP3: WavePad (http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/)

1. Smoothie Song
2. Reasons Why
3. House Carpenter
4. This Side
5. Louisiana 1927 (Randy Newman)
6. Scotch and Chocolate

Yeah, I burned a copy of the NC portion to CD so my daughter could hear it.

While I'm really glad to get to hear the last two songs, I was a bit disappointed in the overall recording quality. And it's a little tough listening to NC do older songs when they've got so much great new material in the can. It's pretty clear from the lackluster performances that they are somewhat bored with the older stuff. They've been performing This Side live for five years now, and Reasons Why for even longer.

BTW, despite Sean and Sara's scepticism. Chris does have the name of the Newman song exactly correct. It is 1927, and it does come from his Good Old Boys album. I've heard them do quite a few Randy Newman songs now (Sail Away and Political Science come to mind). Obviously they know at least that period of his work quite well. (Good Old Boys came right after Sail Away in the Newman catalog of the early 1970s). BTW, Randy Newman continues to write and record great songs, including not only his work for TV (Monk) and movies (Toy Story), but also his own albums.

That particular song, Louisiana 1927, has been widely covered by other artists. Marcia Ball did a very nice version of it a few years ago, and a great version of it turns up on the new Old School Freight Train album that's just out this week. (I hope some of you caught OSFT at Merlefest.)

NC was tired during that performance. They took the stage at half past noon, and noted that, while on the road, such a time of day is early early morning.
They were a lot more alive in concert that night -- even on the older stuff. And I've never heard them do House Carpenter better. Great show.
And I love that Randy Newman cover!

I have recently seen them twice and you're right Scotch and Chocolate is noticably shorter; obviously the section that they took out.

Did anyone else notice a difference in Sean's voice when he is singing This Side on the show? I especially noticed it on the chorus. At first I thought Chris was taking the chorus like he sometimes does, but listening closer to the chorus and the verses, it was Sean.

I am not sure what changed. His voice sounded deeper or something. It had a different tone to it. I really liked it. I sounds like he has been working on his voice...or he was just really really tired...
