I too am surprised that They're Only Pictures or We're Closed didn't make the CD. Also, it looks like the 3rd instrumental is First and Last Waltz. It looks like everthing but First and Last Waltz and Tomorrow is a Long Time were mentioned in the last thread that we did about this CD although Brett did mention Tomorrow in a previous thread. Yes, I'm totally excited and don't know if I can wait until August. Its going to be a long summer.

I was totally excited to see the list on xanga today. There's a few I have heard and a few I still haven't, but I'll just wait and be surprised.

So do we know which of these songs are NC originals and which are covers? We know that quite a few of them are written by the band, and the only one I can say for sure is a cover is Tomorrow Is A Long Time. A quick search on some of the other titles doesn't yield much (except that there are a bunch of songs calle Helena). Anyone know about the lesser known titles - Jealous of the Moon, Best of Luck, or Helena, for example?

e-rock2

Jealous of the Moon was written by Chris and Gary Louris, a former Jayhawk. As far as I know, all of the rest are originals minus the Dylan cover.

does anyone have a show with Eveline in it? i tried to get one last night from archive but the song turned out to be Speak, it was mislabelled...

At the Jannus Landing show from '03 they played Eveline and there are a couple of WFHs that they it played it at... Eveline in WFH Shows (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Watkins%20Family%20Hour%20Eveline )

They played it in Kent (11/03). I produced a high quality stereo recording of that show for broadcast, but obviously I can't distribute it. However, it's possible that someone else either recorded it from the audience or captured my recording when it was broadcast last fall. I know a few people here listened to the webcast.

I don't consider it to be one of their better songs, but I'll reserve judgement until I hear what they do with it on the record. I'd have preferred to see We're Closed on the new record instead. (In fact, I think that song would have made a great single and/or video!)

oh i still need help!
neither song labelled as Eveline on those two WFH shows are the correct song, one is Speak and one is Locking Doors.
and since i do not know what it sounds like, i can't figure out which one actually IS Eveline.
can someone who knows do some research? please? i feel like such a goob. :(

chickzilla,

http://www.archive.org/download/wfh2003-05-07.dsm6.shnf/wfh2003-05-07t13.shn -- this is one of the Eveline tracks from WFH it was labeled as Roses Never Red.

http://www.archive.org/download/wfh2003-04-15.dsm6.shnf/wfh2003-04-15d1t13.shn -- this is the other it was labled Honey Please.

The lables next to the file links are all messed up but if you look down at the setlists and find the file name with the same track number as the song that you are looking for it works.

The difference between the WFH and the NC one is that Chris sings it at the Jannus Landing show, while Sara sings it at WFH shows.

I also have the Jannus Landing show if you're interested.

I'm interested to see what they do with Can't Complain in a studio setting. I am REALLY excited about Scotch and Chocolate - that's one of their new ones I couldn't get enough of. Even though there are a few songs that I've heard in concert that I would love to see on this disc, I'm also glad to see that A LOT of the stuff is fairly new to me. So, even though I know a few of the songs, it's not like I've peeked at ALL my presents before Christmas.;)

I'm so happy. If there was any instrumental I'd want to see on the album, it would be Stumptown (aka Itzinay)... I kinda wished they kept it as Itzinay. I like that name, but whatever. I'm happy!!

last time I was at Largo, I got to hear a lil' bit of the album! Anthony, and then the song after that. they play recorded music while you eat dinner, before the live music starts up, and we were very pleasantly surprised to get a sneak peak at the album. It sounded great!! :D

Wow, you lucky dog you...that is so cool. I bet if you didn't know what to listen for you wouldn't have even noticed it. It takes a true Nickel Creek fan to hear new unreleased stuff. So how was the new album???

just because some songs are not on this cd, i have a feeling we won't have to wait very long to hear them on another nickel creek album...chris said in the N&O: We want (to record) at least three records out in the next five years. it's also pretty sweet how since the first album, there has been one more song to the track list.

this side - 13
wstfd - 14

hopefully they'll keep up the trend with the records-to-be

Yes, indeed. I just saw that last night and I admit it eased my selfish concerns of never hearing They're Only Pictures again.:p And Chris hinted to someone (was it you, Hannah?) about a live album in the future, too.:-)) I am so excited about this album. It sounds/looks like it's going to mark a huge moment for the Creek.

ah that does ease my concerns as well. i think they need to do a Nickel Creek White Album and make a double album with everything they ever want to record all in one place.
i know i could appreciate it.
anyway i finally heard Eveline, i agree with some other people, not my favourite but it could grow on me depending on what they did with it in recording... there, i kept it on topic. :D

Sara once said after a concert that they would prefer to go into the studio once every 6 months if they could. Unfortuantely, the record company won't let them do that. They will probably only go 2 years before the next one.

Didn't think about that option! Which is pretty, too. For some reason, I always say it eva-lean. So I was wondering how NC translates it, so to speak.

Well I know Sara has sung it as eh-vee-lean, (and the eh-vee is kind of slurred - for a lack of a better term - together)

i looked at it an thought it was eh-va-lean personally, but i agree that Sara says eh-vee-lean. boy we could go round in circles on this one forever hm? ;)

yep, that was me and Emily after the show with Edgar Meyer in Memphis! We were asking about a few different songs were were hoping would be on the new album, and he said something about wanting to record a live album in the near future.

The two songs we got to hear at Largo were Anthony and then I think Best of Luck. I recognized Anthony 'cause I'd heard it played at shows before, but on the recording they had all the instruments, not just Sara on her uke. It started off with just the uke, but then after one of the versese you hear the bass come in, and then all the rest of the instruments chime in. (Like how they did it at the Basement in Nashville when Bela Fleck was there, if anyone was at that show)... as far as the song that I think was Best of Luck, I'd never heard it before but it was definitely Sean singing! That's all I really remember about it, other than it sounded really good and I was excited to get a lil' sneak peak!

A live album would be fantastic.
I love Nickel Creek, but I really really love live Nickel Creek. I can't tell you the last time I listened to one of their studio cds. I have some live recordings and they are constantly in my cd player and now on my ipod.

It's such an admirable thing for them to sound just as good or better live than on thier studio stuff....you don't find many bands like that at all...Nickel Creek doesn't need the help of the studio, because they just rock!

It's eveh-lean. We listened to an excerpt from the story of which the song was written about in my Honors English class.

Helena? Hmm.. great song by My Chemical Romance, probably an even better one by my Nickel Creek, hee hee.

I've only heard but four songs off the CD, so it's going to be a super exciting time for my ears in two months!!

I've heard nine of the fourteen, but thats not really saying anything because the songs have probably evolved so much. It's really going to be interesting to hear how some of these songs adapt in the studio. Scotch and Chocolate, for example, always just seemed like a live tune to me with all the energy and everything. It seemed to me like half of that song's excitement had to do with the energy of the audience feeding off of it at the beginning of Nickel Creek shows, but we shall see. I'm still pumped nonetheless!!!!!

At Chris' solo Seattle show, when all three of them got on stage, they played why Should the Fire Die. It was amazing, but kinda short. The chorus was sdomething like why should the fire die, my mom and dad kept theirs alive I had no idea it was going to be about love. Sara said they were law breakers because they werent suppose to play it live yet... Anyway, i cant wait to hear it on the album. They also played two of the three instrumentals that were great (for lack of a better word). So in total with all the other NC shows i've seen, i have heard 7 of the new CD's song. But i cant wait to hear how they change in studio... They can only get better (i hope)

Brett
06-07-2005, 03:35 PM
This is going to sound very bizzare, but I'm curious- would you say the song Why Should The Fire Die is in a more minor or a more major key? For the musically challenged does it sound darker and sad or more bright and happy?

I haven't been lucky enough to attend a concert yet. (so jealous of y'all...)

The songs all sound amazing from what you've been saying. I'm curious; I watched a webcast of one show and saw them play Taxman -- has that ever been recorded? I thought it was a pretty awesome song.

Re: Taxman
And Mutal Admiration Society played it every show on the tour in the summer of 2004. Not exactly Nickel Creek, but it's pretty much the same arrangement, just adding the drums and electric bass. You can download a bunch of versions here:
MAS shows at LMA (http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Mutual%20Admiration%20Society%3A%202004)

I recommend the 8-17-04 Lime Kiln as the best recording of the tour, though my 7-21-04 recording is maybe more similar to a straight Nickel Creek version because it doesn't have the electric bass and the drumming is more minimalist. But it doesn't sound as good as Chris Berryman's brilliant 8-17-04 recording.

I'm excited about this new album. My question is whether anyone knows where I might put my hands on mandolin tablature for Jessamyn's Reel, from Deceiver? I can probably figure it out over the next 400 years, but if anyone can save me the time, I'd be grateful.

And by the way, where is the best place to post such questions? I looked all over this site, but couldn't find a more appropriate spot. I hope this hasn't ruffled any feathers.

Thanks!

@ archive.org if you search for Watkins Family Hour, or Mutual Admiration Society, or even Glen Phillips, you will find Nickel-ish stuff. None of it is purely NC, but most of it is great. I love the Watkins Hour Stuff, it's all just Sara and Sean. Look for the stuff recorded at Largo( that's the BEST ). Hope this helps. :)

Does anyone know if there are any special guest appearances on the new CD or did Nickel Creek just do a CD by themselves?
What makes me wonder is the fact that they have done so much with Glen Phillips in the past, with the Mutual Admiration Society cd, and Glen helping out on both of Sean's solo cds and the fact that Sean and Sara have pretty regularly shown up at his concerts and even gotten up and sang with him on stage.
So, has anyone heard about special guest appearances?

On This Side, they used two bass players, their then current touring bassist Byron House plus the extraordinary bassist Edgar Meyer on Smoothie Song. And on the first Sugar Hill album, it was just Nickel Creek and Chris's father, Scott Thile on bass. So they have a pretty solid history of doing it all themselves.

I pre-ordered the CD on Amazon, sorry Chris, and they give you free streaming of the CD. It is a gem! I was cautious after Mr. Thile's last solo effort( I felt Deceived) and the last project the group did with Glen Phillips. But this...this is heaven! Much better thought out, better melodies, better production. I love the tip of the hat they give to the Beatles and Paul Simon. (Anthony should have been on a hidden track at the end of the CD however..ha)
There is humor, drama, and virtuoso pickin' and fiddlin'. What a sweet sound on the last track! Great singin' too. I've only heard it about 4 times now, but it just keeps getting better on each hearing. It's not their Abbey Road, but it's at least their Revolver, or maybe their Sgt. Peppers. O heck, I'm an old dude. I can't make any comparisons past 1970! Get it! You'll really dig it!

I have a full copy of the CD, including the booklet that has lyrics in it. Feel free to PM me and tell me what lyrics you're stuck with and I'll help you out with them. Hopefully that won't go against the band's wishes, it's not like I'll be posting the lyrics to everything!

And in answer to other discussions above this post, there aren't any guests on the album, at least, if there are, they aren't listed in the creidts, it's just Chris, Sean, Sara and Mark. With the exception of Eric Valentine playing drums on 'Helena', but I wouldn't necessarily count him as a guest because he's already involved in the CD.

I've now listened to the album a few times and feel like making a no doubt premature listing of my favourite tracks...

When in Rome
It is always good to open an album with a bang, and this track rules the roost. An absolute showstopper.

Tomorrow is a Long Time
A beautiful, understated chorus.

Anthony
Several board members should know how much I like this track (although the discussion has been deleted). It is only faulted by how short it is.

First and Last Waltz
Nickel Creek's instrumental tracks are usually so frenetic, this was a very nice change of pace.

I am suprized of the direction of the music. Purists I think would call it some sort of abomination. I prefer to call it innovative. They have taken the music in a completely different direction while at the same time, holding on to many of their roots. KUDOS for a great job on this album.

Yes I agree, but I don't get why they let whatever it was ring like that so long .. if you have it at a hearable level for the whole song, you can't hear it anyway, so when that happened I thought my CD player had broke or something! I like the beginning the most ... its hard to explain ...

i love the song helena. I think its really funny that in the interview, chris mentioned how it was originally penned from a song that no one really liked!!

What interview? And what song?

I believe it was from an interview on Amazon.com. I think he said Helena was written because the producer didn't like this other song called Itinzay (sp???) that the band liked. So they took the best part of the song (only a couple of notes) and made Helena.

Wasn't sure about the CD when I first played it but....wow.....second listen and I can't get enough of it! Fav songs change day to day, but 'Helena' is up there! Just really like that song. 'Anthony' is good especially like Sara's voice on that one....plus Chris whistling in the background. Have really started to like 'Best of Luck'.

Not trying to sour the party here, but has anyone found the new cd a bit too far out? I've been a Creek fan since the beginning but it was because of the original music. Their second release was definitely a step away from the bluegrass sounds of their first cd, but I found enough stuff to make it enjoyable This latest release however just doesn't even sound good. I'm a guy with eclectic tastes in music, but I wish Chris would take a break from singing and stick with mandolin. He does fine on a tune like Sweet Afton where his voice is low-key, but most other tunes just make me cringe when he tries to belt something out. I'd also like to see a little more thought go into the lyrics on most of the pieces.

It sounds like they're experimenting with new genres of music. All good and fine, but they'll probably leave me in the dust as a result.

Not trying top pick on them, because I have enjoyed a lot of their music. I just sometimes get the impression people are more in love with the band itself than the actual music.

To answer your first question, about the first CD, yes I've found it to be very different from the first CD. Definitely a departure from their bluegrass roots, which they acknowledge in several interviews. I can assure you that I love this band for what they do, and not just follow them blindly. Yes, love is blind, but what's the use in loving them if they're not my style? But I love the fact that they can go from bluegrass to alt.rock-indie, since that's where my tastes range. So, yes, I can agree with you that this CD is very different. But I disagree with you in that I think these lyrics are very well thought out - just the simple fact that there are several ways to interpret them shows a kind of subtle poetry. I love this CD as much as the others...but everyone has different tastes.

It's interesting that you should mention that, since the thread titled what if (linked here (http://www.nickelcreek.info/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5114) ) actually discusses that very idea (towards the bottom of the page, Adyn's third or fourth post.

Every party has a pooper that's why we invited you....sorry, I don't mean to be mean, but when you talked about souring the party that immediately popped into my head. Now I can't get that silly song out of my head...darn it...

But to address your other comment. Can't we be fans of both the band and the music? We love their music so that means we love the band and vice versa. It is sort of the whole package that I like. I love their music, how they perform it, the types of concerts they give (smaller and less structured), I love the silly tangents that they go off on between songs, the fact that they love coffee, the fact that they act a lot like me...if you take some of those things away, I would still like them, but maybe not as much.

So I don't think it is wrong to like the whole package. We love and respect the music and that is what we all like to talk about here, but liking the band goes a long with it in most cases.

PrincessNic,

I'll agree that they are a lot of fun to watch because I'm sure they're just plain having a good time. That in itself makes their concerts enjoyable. The variations in music are going to be just personal preference and that I can understand.

As far as liking the whole package? It's near impossible not to like THEM as entertainers who seem to genuinely appreciate their fans. I'm just hoping their next release has more ties to the first couple cd's rather than being another attempt at breaking new ground.

cheers!

I would be surprised if they tried to go back to the sound of the 1st two CD's with their next release. They've done that and the thing that makes them so fascinating to listen to is that fact that you don't know what they are going to do next. They genuinely throw themselves into discovering and breaking new ground as I think that is what makes the whole process interesting for them. The great thing is that the 1st two CD's will always be there to listen to even if you don't like anything else along rhe way. People said the same kinds of things when This Side came out.

Some of you may be interested in information on Mark Schatz's website. He talks about his bass playing on WSTFD and the basses he used. He has a track by track breakdown that includes some somgs that didn't make the cut for the album.

My favourite track has to be Scotch and Chocolate, because now I've moved down to Cornwall, it's the perfect song to listen to while im walking along the cliffs and looking out to the gorgeous sea.

It never fails to make me smile, even after the millionth time of hearing it!

oooh they cut a version of Caleb Meyer. That's a Gillian Welch tune, right? I'd love to hear that.

There are several live versions of Caleb Meyer floating around as they've played it live numerous times in the last year and a half or so.

My favorites are probably Somebody More Like You (I can play the guitar on it.) and Stumptown (I can play the guitar on that, too. And I love traditional bluegrass!) I was kind of disappointed that there wasn't very much guitar on this new album. And not as many solos, either. But, it still is my favorite album of all time. It's a sweet album.
