I recieved an email from the creekster website today....

Chris Thile of Nickel Creek will be performing solo at Q Cafe, Thursday June 2nd at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 and are available at the door the night of the show. Q Café is located at 3223 15th Ave W, Seattle, WA 98119. Call the venue at 206-352-2525 for more info. Recent solo Chris performances in Nashville have included appearances by Byron House, Minton Sparks, Edger Meyer, Bela Fleck, Glen Phillips, and all the members of Nickel Creek. This is not to be missed!

Who's going!?! :D

Short notice, but I can't miss this one!

If I weren't working from 8am to 10pm in SPOKANE, I'd soooo be there. *Sniffles* I miss Seattle. I wonder how I'm going to deal with missing actual Nickel Creek shows because I can't take the time off of work to not only go to the actual shows (which isn't so crazy) and find someone who'd actually make the few hour drive with me (yeah, 6 hours one way isn't much compared to some diehard fans ;) but when you have no car and you must enlist the help of someone else, it might just be a hassle ;)).

I just noticed that Chris was playing in Seattle yesterday and already booked a room for me and my friend to go. Can't wait either, cause Wednesday's at work are my fridays. So it'll be an awsome way to kick of the weekend.

You guys are really lucky. If I were living in Salem already I would beg my dad to take me up there. I have always wanted to go to Washington. All of you who go have fun!

I had to switch days at work just so i could get the day off to go try and get in. When i called the venue at noon, less than 2 hours after they sent out the newsletter, she said she already had about 15 calls for Chris' show! And the venue only holds 130 people. I cant wait. I have been soooo jealous of people who live near Nashville and now hes coming here!!! I already know the show will be amazing! This will tide me over till they start the next Nickel Creek tour!

Thursday can't come quickly enough!
Never been to the Q Cafe, but it's only 4 miles from my office. I'm bringing my wife and 3 kiddos, at $12 a ticket it's cheaper than a babysitter. Plus my 6-year-old daughter has a crush on Chris 8-] (don't worry, she knows that Chris is married...)

UpInYourHeart, I feel for ya... my brother Tim is also stuck in Spokane and wishing he could be at the show.

Oh and hi everybody, just joined the board, have been a NC fan for going on 3 years. Live in Poulsbo and work in Seattle doing 3D animation. Just started playing mandolin a few months ago, have played piano since I was 7 or so. Can't put the mando down!

He he, no kidding UpInYH, do you play violin? <squeeek, squeeek> My bro would probably make the trip over if he didn't have finals this week.

Bummer you can't go M&M, I was thinking about taking my archos and recording using the built-in mic. I don't have anything better...

Nashville??? No whining from people in Nashville! Hehehe. Chris has played there several times recently, and he's doing so again on the 5th.

Myself, I'm debating the 5 hour drive to see Mike & Chris on July 2nd. Though that's road travel on a 4th of July weekend... slightly suicidal around here LOL. It's been quite a while since he's played CA, we got spoiled cause the creek used to play here so much!! Hopefully that happens again with this next NC tour :D

Hope everyone has a BLAST at the Seattle show... wish I could have flown up for that *dramatic sigh* but can't make em all, eh? ;)

120 luckly people got into this FINE Coffee House/Venue/Community Space. Chris was floored, he was thinking 40 people maybe.....but 120.....a SOLD OUT SHOW, with only 12 days notice, he was visibly shaken for a few minutes.

1st Set- Classic Chris, a little fast, a little slow and a whole bunch of OH SO RIGHT!. He played a little Radiohead, a few originals, a song that didn't make the cut on the new album (and doesn't even have a name), and an AMAZING MASTERS OF WAR. (Damn, i just love that tune..and Chris did it up RIGHT.) and a few more.

2nd set- BACH (finishing to a standing ovation)....then a couple very special guests joined Chris onstage for the rest of the night....thats right folks... this just turned into a NICKEL CREEK show for a little bit. Sean & Sara stepped up and as always this threesome just blew me away.

EncoreS- yep multipules (did you expect anything else), 1st Encore...Band, couple quick songs and goodnight.......2nd Encore, Band, a new tune from the new album, done with the 3 of them acoustic, standing at the front of the stage (my FAVORITE way to hear this group, unflavored by electricity). 3rd Encore- Just Chris...a Beck tune, then a Wilco tune & Goodnight!

As always Chris (& Sara & Sean), thanks for a wonderful evening....and please come back soon.

This is Edward R Murrow....no wait, this is Skot signing off.

(Did I just make an Edward R Murrow referance? Does ANYBODY here even know who that is? Damn i'm old......LOL)

back on topic... i am TERRIBLY jealous! especially of the Bach set. did we determine if anyone taped the show?

WOW, wow wow... last night was AMAZING! We got to the venue almost 3 HOURS before the show and there were already people in line! So worth it though, Chris treated us to an incredible set. Skot's review pretty much covers it. Having Sean and Sara there was a huge bonus! The unplugged Nickel Creek encore was a truly religious experience.

Chris played a song from a new SOLO album that is forthcoming. In the Unlikely key of A flat... a flat hurts! was Warning. Chris is way too frickin' prolific for just one guy... loved 'em.

A few more highlights: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground (White Stripes), This Is All Real, Jessamyn's Reel and On Ice from Deceiver, 3 Fiddle Tunes Written by People That are Still Alive medley including Ode to a Butterfly.

There was another fun song that got dropped from the new album, Someone went to Something and he met a Sea Urchin (help me out on this one guys!) 8-]

Then there was another one about getting dumped and trying to find another girlfriend, it was hilarious!

Chris, Sara and Sean hung around afterwards, gratiously catering to all the drooling fanboys/girls (I was one of 'em...) signing and getting pictures taken.

Chris, Sean and Sara, Thanks so much! Please come back to Seattle soon!!

Pic attached, Willow was the youngest person at the show and seemed to be enjoying herself! 8-]

That song, about the sea urchin, Chris played it on the woodsongs webcast. Oh, man, I love that instrumental. He said something about it being his first attempt of writing an instrumental that tells a story. I think it's called Jessamyn looks for (something) and meets a sea urchin. Can't remember...Great song though.

Hey folks,
Thanks for those that came out last night to the great Chris Thile and Nickelcreek show. I work as the executive director of Q Cafe and the lead pastor of the church (www.seattlequest.org) that started the separate non-profit cafe and community center.

It was a great treat and shock to us to be contacted by Chris' peeps as they were looking for a venue to throw an intimate concert. As many of you have already shared, it was a great concert and a great treat for even our staff to enjoy.

Some of you might be encouraged to check out our shows on Friday nights and an open mic on Tuesday nights. And if you enjoyed the space and cause of our cafe, drop by to support us.

Thanks Chris et al for a great show.

3davE, the sea urchin song was titled, Jesse went to Hawaii and he met a sea urchin.

My friend and I were sitting behind you at the show and I have to say that your daughter was one of the most well-behaved babies I have ever seen. And that picture is great! I am so bummed that we didn't stay to meet Chris.

That show was the best. There really are no words to describe the experience. All the words I come up with are never good enough. It's something you could only understand if you were there.

What an amazing show! Can anyone tell me the name of the Bach piece Chris played?

mandofocus
06-04-2005, 04:26 AM
The Bach Piece was the Bm Partita for Solo Violin. Also it's not Hawaii but Haola-Lai (sp?). That WAS an amazing show. I loved Chris's solo redition of On Ice. But the Bach was the absolute best.

AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! LOL, this thread drives me crazy! As if it wasn't bad enough to miss yet another Thile solo show, it turns out to be an imprompto Nickel Creek show? GRRR! lol They need to do such a thing in my new unfortunate home of Spokane, yes, yes...or umm a one-woman riot'll start? Hahha...yes, a 5'0 lady is very threatening? (Only with a big ole rolling pin though!) :-P

yes, i must say that show was pretty darn sweet...and the bach was incredible...i had to keep reminding myself i was actually watching somebody play this - i wasn't imagining it!!!

hey dave, i was three people behind you in line... :)

oh and thank your wife again for taking the picture for me w/chris... :)

and my memory of that little instrumental is something like - in which we go to haola-lai (sp?) and jesse meets a sea urchin...

a game of telephone anyone???

i thought this was funny - we'd (my sister and i) gotten in and grabbed our seats, and we were just chilling....we'd been inside for maybe ten minutes. so i was turning around, looking at the room, people watching, all that....this short (sorry!!! :)) guy with kinda spiky hair and a green jacket w/a backpack walked in the door and looked around a bit...i thought to myself, dude, that guy looks like sean watkins... i looked away, looked back, and thought again, dude he really looks like sean watkins... then i poked my sister and said, dude, i think that's sean watkins...

yeah, it was... :)

Hi Eugene, thanks for hosting the show! Q Cafe is a great venue, we'll definitely be back (especially if Chris makes a habit of performing there!). Looking through your list of previous shows, I wish we could have made it up for Jacob's Well (Kevin, the drummer, is a friend from church) and Smoosh. Does Q send out a newsletter?

I'm so glad that they played songs from the new albumn. I was surprised by Why Should the Fire Die. I didnt expect it to be about love! It was completely different then i thought it would be. But i love it anyway!Even though as Sara said they are law breakers. I also liked the song about breakups. I was amazed, As was everyone else, by Bach. The songs were all so different! Bob Dylan, Beck, Bach, The Strokes, originals, instrumentals, ect.... I just sat there amazed that i was so lucky to be at the show.

Ohh and for people who are hopping for a copy of the show, a guy in front of me (well in front of Dave, i was sitting behind him) was recording the show... the problem is, he asked the staff what the taping policy was and they asked Chris for him and he said that he could tape for his own personal pleasure but if he (being Chris) finds a copy on the internet, he would be very disappointed and sad. So, i dont think you'll have any luck finding a copy becase i dont think he wanted to disappoint Chris.

e-rock2,

Thanks! I wish our other 2 kids could've been there too, but the show started pretty late, and MAN was it hot in there. Gotta start 'em young, no BS in our house... 8-]

AfuNK3,

Thanks for the clarificationon the song (thanks mandofocus too). Willow did great, we were a bit worried about bringing her, must've been the music 8-] It got a little shaky during Bach, Willow had the hiccups the whole time but I didn't need to take her outside (whew!!) Didn't expect to be the only ones there with a child...

mandofocus,

Did Chris rearrange the Bm Partita for mando? Or did he play it as written for violin? Absolutely amazing, talk about endurance and virtuosity.

SeattleNCfan,

The guy in front of me had a deck, but no microphone, and wasn't allowed to plug into the mixing board. I think he said Chris said if I see this on the 'net I'll be personally hurt. Understandable since he played some new solo and NC material.

I recorded about 1/4 of the show on my mp3 player, but even if Chris had said it was OK to share, you wouldn't want it. The sound of the hard drive spinning up is louder than the music...

I can't imagine Chris would rearrange Bach... I wasn't there (sadly) but generally Chris plays straight up what was written for violin. Though you have to get creative with slurs & the few things mandos can't do physically since they aren't bowed. As far as arranging, I'd not think he'd mess with the Master hehe.

Bach kicks butt. :D

Just butting it... but yeah, those are lyrics from Tell It To Me by Old Crow Medicine Show. Of course however it could be a traditional tune but I've only heard it performed by OCMS.
