View Full Version : Who's Making The Rhythm Slap Sound?

Hey all -- noobie here

Been listening to all the NC songs over and over and over and I can't quite figure out which of the guys is making the percussive slap sound. Some songs it sounds like Sean -- but then you hear him playing at the same time. Other times it sounds like Chris, but then you hear him at the same time. All the while, the slap sound never changes as it should when switching between instruments.

Or maybe, they have a percussionist playing on the CDs (bought the CDs electronically so I don't have any liner notes to read)?

TIA,
Maury

its all of them, sometimes even Sara, sometimes on an entirely other track, or its their feet, or sometimes they will bring somebody in. maybe someone can give you specifics, but since i have no liner notes i just have to go from previous experience and know that they have used everything from hands, to feet, to tangerines on guitar cases to make the percussion sounds they use. :)
welcome to the board by the way!

Sounds like you are talking about the mandolin chop. In which case, that would be Chris. The mandolin fills the role of the snare drum in this kind of music and makes the percussive slap on the off-beat.

maybe Chris is a closet tangerine virtuoso?

Yes, that's what I was referring to. Thanks!

A lot of the percussion stuff is mandolin chop, which has already been said. However, the more bassy percussion is done, fittingly, on a bass. Every NC album has incorporated a bass player, and this adds to the percussion by tapping different areas on the instrument. (Speak, Young, I Should've Known Better, to name a few)
