So, I'm listening to Helena, and I get a very strong Beatles vibe, a modern day Eleanor Rigby maybe. Anybody catch any other Beatles influence on the disc, other than, like the Beatles post 1965, NC is really pushing the boundaries of their sound and isvexperiementing quite a bit on the album? Anthony with a 78 RPM record sound to it is something I could see the Beatles doing.

There's a strong Elliot Smith influence in Nickel Creek's music these days which may sound like a bit Beatlesey (is that a word?) to a lot of people.
You can hear the same sort of thing on Chris' last album, especially on the track This is All Real. Sounds like the Beatles to some, sounds like an Elliot Smith track to me!
Of course, for all I know they could be directly influenced by the Beatles and I'm talking rubbish, but there you go...
In one of the Symposium lectures, Chris did talk about the Beatles as an (obivious) and favorite influence in a list of artists when he was asked what is on your ipod these days.
Heck, what higher influences can one have in popular music? Heheh. (and by pop, I mean anyting not classical LOL... otherwise I'd say Bach [lolol] )

The Beatles influence is both direct and indirect on Nickel Creek. Both This Side and WSTFD show enormous influence from the Beatles. It turns up in many ways, some subtle, some not. And it's not just Chris - Sean is also obviously influenced by the Beatles, especially Paul McCartney.
BTW, you can often hear a strong Brian Wilson influence on Sean as well.

Can't Complain reminds me of Hey Jude--it starts out very slow and then ends w/ the singers screaming the chorus many times in unison...

There is no doubt that they have been listening to the Beatles. They have made references to them a few times recently at some of the shows that I've seen. As far as Elliot Smith goes, he too was influenced by the Beatles and even covered their track Because from Abbey Road.
Yes, I've heard the Brian Wilson influence on Sean as it shows up quite a bit on the 26 Miles CD.

Yes, sorry, that's what I was inferring - that the Beatles influence came via Elliot Smith who was very clearly inspired by them. Obviously, judging by the other comments here, NC do have a direct Beatles influence though so I'll shut up :D

In the Amazon.com interview NC definintely credit the Beatles with influencing the new CD. It's in another thread if you haven't heard it.

Yes - I thought many of the harmonies sounded Beach Boys-esque.

It's funny, after listening to the new album I had an urge to revisit my old Beatles stuff. There's definitely a late era Beatle-esque influence.
If you love Beatles music, check out Mike Portnoy's (Dream Theater drummer) Beatles tribute Yellow Matter Custard, featuring some of the most talented musicians in the business (Paul Gilbert, Matt Bissonette, Neil Morse). There is a DVD and a double CD of the live performance, and it's really good and a lot of fun. You can find it at Mikeportnoy.com.

i am going to go buy Smile and Pet Sounds as soon as i can, i have been putting it off but these harmonies make it impossible to let that slide by any more.
