I agree. I know everyone else on the board is giving their own opinions on the new album so I will make it short for now....

After a first listen, I am shocked. Like everyone else I always said that this album was a part of the progression of the band and it wasn't that different. But after listening to some of the songs, my jaw dropped. At the end of Helena, the end of Can't Complain...Best of Luck. Those particular parts seem very different from what they have done in the past...even different from what Deciever was.

I don't know. I am sure it will grow on me like This Side did, but it is more different than I had expected. It is awesome and I love it, but it was just a little shocking at first listen...but thinking back on it so was This Side.

More later...

After reading my last post again, I realize that it sounds like I don't like the cd...and I do. I love it, love it, love it!!!! I can't say that enough. It excites me to listen to it.

However, certain parts of the cd shocked me. The majority of the album was right on par with what they are doing...but then there are the jaw-dropping moments...and really the songs that shock me are the ones I end up loving the most.

I love the sound at the end of First and Last Waltz that sounds like something spinning and making a whirring noise (reminds me of Radiohead or Coldplay) and then the first breath that Chris takes before he sings, Helena!!! The drums in Helena are really great too!! I wonder how they will do that live if they don't have a drummer??

This album grabbed me immediately, unlike a lot of other folks. It was apparent by the middle of the second song that they have evolved into a brand new genre of their own creation. You can't call it Nugrass or alt-anything any more. It's something else. The vocals are amazing. This is the best album of the current millennium thus far.

My only minor beef is that at times the production seems a bit too dry (sorta trendy, I guess) and they go a bit too much with the nasaly compressed vocal effect thing (though it's subtle). But it's a minor nit.
