View Full Version : How come no one ever talks about Derek Jones?

If your asking yourself, who is Derek Jones? then you and I are not too different because I had to look his name up on the NC site. But he is the 4th member of Nickel Creek and anyone who has seen NC live on this last tour knows what an amazing Bass player he is. The dude can flat play and I wish that his name would get some more exposure. I'm guessing he did the bass on the new album, but I could be wrong. I think there are 3 reasons why Derek is not discussed a whole lot. 1. He may be thought of as just the touring or guest bass player with the 3 real members of NC. 2. A lot of people tend to forget about or not focus on the upright bass. 3. He is not as young (I don't know how old he is) as Sara, Chris, and Sean and so the record label is trying to keep NC marketed as 3 young musical whiz kids.

any thoughts on this?

4. He's not Edgar Meyer. While I do think Derek is a good bass player, and fits in well with the group, he can't compare to Edgar. For those of you who don't know who Edgar Meyer is, first check out Chris' latest (he does amazing bass work on Raining at Sunset and Sinai To Cannan). For further listening, I *highly* recommend Short Trip Home.

I agree with you banjoscott! Derek needs some love! A while ago I started a thread about Derek but I guess now it's too old so it's not on here anymore! But Derek is awesome, I met him once and he was SOOO nice!

Ken - I will certainly agree with you that there is only one Edgar Meyer, but it sounds like you are not giving any other upright bassist a chance to be even discussed or mentioned if their name is not Edgar Meyer.

I saw Derek play bass with Jeff Coffin's band after the NC set at Riverbend, he is a straight jazzer too.

Ok, I guess my plug for edgar was a bit strong :) I am a rather strong supporter of Edgar, but I didn't mean to say that there were no other worthy bass players. Sorry about that. I was actually rather impressed with Derek last time I saw NC back in April.

I was actually rather impressed with Derek last time I saw NC back in April. I'm very glad he switched to using a real, full size bass instead of that stand up electric thing. The real thing sounds a lot better.

Actually, the reason that Derek isn't spoken about much, either on the Sugar Hill site or on here, is probably because (unless things have changed in the past year) he's not officially a member of the band... although he's been with them f[or a year and a half now, he's their long-term touring bass player. The band is (well, last I checked) officially a partnership between Chris, Sara and Sean.

Derek is an incredibly cool guy... very low key and humble like the rest of the band... and he's actually not much older than Sean... I think he's 27 or 28 and Sean is 25.

I also happen to think he's a pretty kick butt bass player... when you listen to some of the solos he does, it's clear he's not just a hack.

I agree that he's kind of the least-discussed person, but his role seems to be to kind of stay in the background, and he seems totally down with that, from what I know from talking with him.

you can't say enough about edgar meyer. pretty much he is one of my favorite people to listen to and imitate[he, darol anger, creek, stuart duncan, bela, and a few others are all there together] , - especially the uncommon ritual cd that he, bela, and mike marshall did....- i first saw him play 12 years ago in new mexico- had no clue how big he was goign to influence me back then...

Edgar plays bass on the new CD, not Derek. The credits for the CD lists Edgar as the only credit for bass on the CD.

My bad guys, Byron House plays on the CD, not Edgar. Byron played on some of the tracks on Chris' CD in case anyone doesn't know. Sorry for the mix up, I had Edgar on the brain because I just found out that he and Chris are playing in Greensboro, NC in 2 weeks.

No Derek or Edgar, just Byron.

I know! I love Derek! i can't believe they ditched him! Hopefully he will still tour with him...I mean, Chris's Dad played bass on their last album but Derek is the only one i've ever seen play with them live...I'll miss him if he left the band!

i know! although he is not an *official* part of Nickel Creek, I definately think that they wouldn't be the same without him!
