Hey, I'm new to these boards and I was just wondering if anyone has heard of any classical madolin concertos and by what composers? I know Beethoven wrote for madolin but I can't find any concerto works. I know this is a pretty strange question but I did a search and nothing came up so if anyone has any information please enlighten :D

Always,
Dan

certainly in the UK there's a CD called mandolin moods which I believe has some classical stuff on. amazon.co.uk should still have it (simon mayor was behind the whole thing)

You'll definitely want to check out the Modern Mandolin Quartet's website (www.modernmandolinquartet.com). They've been around since 1985, and Chris Thile was a member of MMQ for a couple of years before Nickel Creek became super popular... but they've recorded a number of classical pieces, some written for string quartet, some for mandolin, and a few specially commissioned for the quartet.

The band members are pretty accessible, so if you email them (there's an address on the website), I'm sure they'd be happy to help you find the music you're looking for.

There are four works for mandolin by Beethoven, all of which are among his :Works without Opus Numbers::
WoO 43 : Two pieces for mandolin and piano
WoO 44 : Two pieces for mandolin and piano

They are not among his masterpieces, but they are enjoyable.

Hey,

There are also some concertos by Vavaldi for mandolin. Although they are not quite what I would call high quality pickin', they are classical. Also, (Shamless plug) Mike Marshal and Chris Thile will be commin' out with a new duo cd soon; you won't want to miss it, I heard some selections that were going to be recorded on it at Wintergrass last year. One more thing, there are some classical mandolin pieces by Mark O'Conner on his CD Midnight on the Water. A good CD for the virtuoso listener.
