Unsure if this is in the right forum

Is there a specific name for the Font Nickel Creek uses for their logo?
and/or
Does anyone know the name of a font that's close to it?

Tinuviel Girl

I think it is just Times New Roman .. or else it is just extremely close to it ...

I think she means the This Side logo, with the crown and such. Most likely.

ModernElegance
08-19-2005, 04:15 PM
Sorry for not being specific...I was meaning the Crown/This Side logo...but thanks for the quick responses!!

Tinuviel Girl

I always figured that was drawn by hand ... hmm

matt the fiddler
08-19-2005, 05:16 PM
no one has guessed the WSTFD font yet.. lol it has way more characteristic than any of the installed with windows.

Tinuviel Girl
08-19-2005, 08:38 PM
so your saying you know what it is?

fiddlincklcrker

Of course he knows, now whether or not Matt tells us is just another one of his secrets.

matt the fiddler
08-20-2005, 09:59 AM
IT is one of those it will be in my grave secrets.. I know because of the design process of the site. I auctually really liked the font.- especailly the q mark.... AS a web designer. [and Adyn agrees with me on this] Playing with unseen fonts is possibly one of the most enjoyable parts... and it helps get a look across that seems more original- when there are subtilities in the fonts people arn't used to seeing..

you can see what i mean here (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/cherrypick/) fonts be fun

ModernElegance
08-20-2005, 10:06 AM
I'm one of those font freaks that has her font folder full of different fonts, so I understand exactly what you mean.

matt the fiddler
08-20-2005, 10:13 AM
seriously.. fining the right font takes longer than any part of the design..

at one point i had more fonts plugged in to adobe font folio than would be displayed at once by windows HA HA...

fiddlincklcrker
08-20-2005, 11:18 AM
How do you find the fonts or even make them? I am a computer nerd, but have no idea about fonts, except if they are given to me like in word processing documents.

ModernElegance
08-20-2005, 11:41 AM
I go to a website to d/l most of mine, it's free and it helps my obsession! It's www.dafont.com
I'm sure that the font they used here wasn't a freeware/shareware font. They more than likely bought rights to use it.

matt the fiddler
08-20-2005, 08:05 PM
it is packaged in one of the big font packs.. [that leaves only 50,000 fonts to sift through :)]

you can serach several free font sites, some don't have bad fonts.. or you can buy font packs.. etc.

a few of my fav font packs are 150 or so pixel fonts, and the one that has 200 handwriting fonts or so in it.. soo much selection :)

Good font usage is one of the things that really sets a designer apart from someone who just has Photoshop and Illustrator and messes around with them.

Though... I did have a client of mine pick a logo I did using one of the default OS fonts installed on a mac hahaha... oh well, it looked cool and they were happy :D (plus there was more to the logo than type... but, I digress)

A real font collection is a gem. Esp. if you can take the time to print out samples of what you have. (Or go legit and buy a set that comes with a guide LOL)

I guess this is sorta on topic... LOL.

Tinuviel Girl
08-21-2005, 12:45 PM
I found it (see wallpaper in WSTFD? Wallpapers thread)

muahahah

creaker
08-21-2005, 10:13 PM
So did I! Muhahahah...sorta. It's preeeeeetty darn close at least. I think the one they used must be a slight variant of it. The one I found is the one on the top and theirs is on the bottom...

Tinuviel Girl
08-22-2005, 03:34 PM
No I really didn't I just used photoshop cleverly ...

BUT! I think that the font we are looking for is the same one they print Harry Potter books in. The actual text that is. LOOK! I seriously think its the same. Creaker what font is that?

matt the fiddler
08-22-2005, 03:56 PM
yours is gettign close. but liek you said.. not quite there yet. the base if the N isn't the same, the y's curve is a little off, i dot's alittle different.. but to everybody else [but anal font people.] :) :) :) :):) good selecting.

Tinuviel Girl
08-22-2005, 04:01 PM
Matt, do you know if its what they use for HP books?

creaker
08-22-2005, 04:04 PM
Ok well, how 'bout some hints... Does the font name start with either an A or a C?

matt the fiddler
08-22-2005, 04:34 PM
Yes, the font used in HP was the 1989 version of Adobe Garmond.

Garmond is one of the more standard windows fonts.. [in the top 25-50 type fonts used at least]

It was also printed 30 mins from where I used to live [Crasfordsville Indiana]

creaker
08-22-2005, 04:43 PM
But is that font the same font used for WSTFD?

matt the fiddler
08-22-2005, 08:55 PM
nope:-))

creaker
08-22-2005, 11:27 PM
Is it an Adobe font though?

Tinuviel Girl
08-23-2005, 03:31 PM
Matt you turd? A clue? Anything?

matt the fiddler
08-23-2005, 04:15 PM
It is not Garmond.

Tinuviel Girl
08-23-2005, 05:18 PM
well obviously it isn't garmond ... maybe garamond ... but not garmond ... that or we are talking bout a completely different font which is very possible ... preferably a better clue?

no commenting on my excess of question marks in my previous post ...

I know I'm dumb, but can anyone tell me how to utilize downloaded fonts? Whenever I've downloaded one, it simply comes up as a file in Notepad. How can I configure the font to be used in other programs? I've always wondered...

Tinuviel Girl
08-24-2005, 03:36 PM
You have to unzip it. Then you have to copy it into your fonts folder to install it. Which can be found in your Windows folder, or from your control panel. With Windows 2000 anyway ...

yeah what she said, it'll usually install them automatically when you put them in the font folder.

08-25-2005, 05:06 PM
my bad garamond... lol It isn't it either

Tinuviel Girl

Perhaps we should answer the question that was originally asked ... font for This Side! ... no idea ...

How bout Baramond matt? Muahaha its dang close ...

What IS the font for This Side? I NEED to know!!!!!!!!!! I don't really know where to look either....I've tried to look on font websites but no luck.

creaker
09-03-2005, 12:36 PM
I don't think it's a font you can get on the web, even if it is a font. I'm sure it was made specifically for use with their album artwork. The only people who probably have it is their webmaster or whoever did the artwork for This Side.

AngelofMusic

Drat. well thanks for telling me. :) Is there anything even somewhat close to it that anyone knows of?

FONT RECOMENDATION - I need a decent looking font for Nickel Creek, and just thought I'd let anybody recommend one ... so if you know any good ones help me out eh?

creaker
10-07-2005, 11:25 PM
Well what are you gonna use it on? It depends on which font would look good with it...

Tinuviel Girl
10-08-2005, 10:53 AM
Well, its for a black & gray baseball T, ... here's what i have so far ...

fiddlincklcrker
10-08-2005, 12:56 PM
I am still having trouble getting the font to work. I know that you have to unzip it but I can't figure out how to. I right click on the icon but it gives me no option. What am I doing wrong? Help me please!

creaker
10-08-2005, 04:40 PM
If you have Windows XP then it should unzip itself after downloading. If you have an older OS version than you probably need something like WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/).

Is there gonna be a picture on the shirt, or anything else for that matter? Or just the text logo?

fiddlincklcrker
10-08-2005, 08:08 PM
Well I do have Windows XP I just don't know how to transfer the font into my fonts folder. I tried to copy and paste but it didn't work. I feel so foolish.

Tinuviel Girl
10-09-2005, 11:53 AM
Prolly just a text logo Nickel Creek on the front, and Always Listen on the back ...

creaker
10-09-2005, 04:39 PM
Okay. Let me think on it for a bit...

Here's an article on installing fonts in Windows XP:

Installing Fonts in Windows XP (http://windows.about.com/od/tipsarchive/l/bltip687.htm)

creaker
10-09-2005, 04:56 PM
How 'bout something like this... [evil eye]

Either way I think that Always Listenmight look good in a handwriting type of font...

creaker
10-09-2005, 04:59 PM
Or you could go with something very um...skateboardish? like this one...

creaker
10-09-2005, 05:48 PM
Okay, now if this isn't the WSTFD font than I don't know what is...

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:36 PM
Hey thanks creaker for the information. But still every time I try to put the file in it says File invalid or damaged, so then I open the folder and try and put it in and it doesn't. I will keep trying, because I want some super cool fonts!

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:38 PM
Does it happen with multiple fonts?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:42 PM
What do you mean????

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:43 PM
Have you tried installing several different fonts to make sure it's not just the font?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:44 PM
Yeah I did, I tried reposting to write that, but I did it too soon after writing the first one. I have downloaded about 10 different ones and they all come out with the same result. They won't copy. Any ideas?

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:45 PM
Hmmm. What extension do the font files have?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:46 PM
Would it be better to save the font to my desktop or somewhere else? I have been saving it to my desktop, is that bad.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:47 PM
I think it says zip for its extension, not quite sure what you mean, but I think that is the answer.

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:47 PM
It should be fine to download it to the Desktop.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:48 PM
Hmm, maybe with one of these fonts that I am downloading it will be the miracle one and work.

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:49 PM
You need to unzip them before you can install them.

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:51 PM
If it's a folder when it's unzipped you need to open it and copy just the font file, not the read me or anything else.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:52 PM
Well you said that if I had Windows XP, that I wouldn't need to. If I do how do I do it? When I right click on the icon it doesn't give an option.

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:53 PM
Have you tried double clicking it?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:54 PM
Yeah I open it up and take the one that if you were to click on it, the name of the file is the font, but it won't copy.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:55 PM
Double Clicking opens it up, it doesn't put it in the fonts folder

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:56 PM
Have you tried just dragging it into the font folder instead of copying?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:57 PM
Yeah and it does nothing.

creaker
10-09-2005, 06:57 PM
What do you mean nothing?

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:58 PM
I feel like such a natural born blonde, which I am. No hair color could hide that.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 06:59 PM
It acts like I did nothing. I click on the icon and have my fonts folder open and drag it and it does nothing. Thats what I mean.

creaker
10-09-2005, 07:00 PM
So it's not placing it in the folder? Let me go look it up online and I'll report back in a little bit.

fiddlincklcrker
10-09-2005, 07:02 PM
Ok thanks. I feel like a fool, because normally I can figure out what I am doing wrong but this time not.

creaker
10-09-2005, 08:30 PM
Why don't you send me the link to one of the fonts you've downloaded to see if I can get it to work.

Tinuviel Girl
10-10-2005, 03:20 PM
Creaker what font is that???? That is extremely close, what does Nickel Creek look like in it? Its all about the C ...

creaker
10-10-2005, 06:49 PM
It's Caslon Old Face. I think they're the same. They're pretty much identical other than maybe the tracking. Am I right, Matt?

Tinuviel Girl
10-11-2005, 03:07 PM
Ya if thats not it, I'm going to throw a tizzy ..
Is that a free font??

creaker
10-11-2005, 04:39 PM
No, you can buy it here (http://www.fontshop.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=verity.search&font_categories=1&font_categories_search=font_name_search&searchstr=Caslon+Old+Face) for $49.50, though.

You can also get it here (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/caslon-old-face/).

I'm sure there are probably some other places that sell it too.

Tinuviel Girl
10-11-2005, 07:40 PM
So I did you buy it then? I would never buy a font ...

creaker
10-11-2005, 09:36 PM
No, but why would you never buy a font?

Tinuviel Girl
10-12-2005, 09:37 PM
Well how did you get it? I dunno seems like a bit of a waste of money, I mean what if you reformatted and lost it eh?

creaker
10-12-2005, 11:35 PM
I typed in Nickel Creek in the preview box. You can back your fonts up on CD so that if your computer crashes you can recover it.

Tinuviel Girl
10-14-2005, 03:46 PM
Yeah, but what if you didn't eh?
What site did you use?

creaker
10-16-2005, 08:51 PM
Well if you backed it up as soon as you bought it I doubt it would be a problem... Unless of course you lost your backup. But that's kinda unlikely. What site did I use for what? Previewing it? If that's what you meant, then I think I used both.

So... Is there a font that we know of that's This Side? Or do we know for sure that it was a specially made font?

Tinuviel Girl

We're pretty sure it was a specifically made font. But someone could maybe turn it into a font.

when you get a font you get a .zip file containing all the needed instalation files.. you put those on your backup drives

Do you still need help? I think I had the same problem as you. So you unzip it, and you open windows explorer and click and drag the .ttf file or whatever the font file is and put it in your temp folder or whatever. Then you open your control panel and find your fonts folder, then you go file and install new font, and select your the font you want to install and there you go. I hope that helps...
