Hmmmm...the weakest of the band's outings?

Hmmmmm indeed.

Seems like the reviewer is not a Chris Thile fan.... though I have to admit (as a die hard Thile fan) that I was also suprised at how many tracks he took lead vocals on.

The reviewer also mentioned that Sara has
a little girl vocal(?) on Tomorrow Is A
Long Time... If that were me writing that
same review, I'd be more honest...

Whoever wrote this article must be partially deaf or have BAD taste in music. The point about there not being a good single is entirely untrue in my opinion. Not only is there a good single option, there are SEVERAL good single options. And did they just insult Chris Thile's lead vocal abilities?! Jealous of the Moon, Doubting Thomas, and Eveline are all AWESOME, NOT dull.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I am also entitled to think that this review is flat-out wrong.....lol

Chris Thile is the least charismatic lead singer, yet he tackles nearly half of the album’s 14 tracks himself.

WHAT????!!!! Chris has been called a lot of things, but least charismatic is not one of them. If we are judging here, he just might be the most charismatic. I do agree that Sara, and most definitely Sean, should have sung lead on a few more songs, but Chris's vocals are part of the reason this album is so good. You can tell he is really into the songs he is singing.

That is the second reviewer that has insulted Chris's singing. People just don't understand.

It appears as if that critic has something against Chris. He slammed Into the Cauldron...but loved 26 Miles.

On the other hand, another critic over there really liked the Mutual Admiration Society set.

As for this being the 2nd person to criticize Chris, critics tend to hang in bunches.

If Chris Thile isn't an awesome singer, then I would like to know who is.

I can honestly say that I've never heard the words least charismatic and Chris Thile in the same sentence before this review.

Well...one could make an argument that vocally, Chris isn't always strong...meaning, he's no Josh Groban when it comes to control. HOWEVER that's most of his appeal (for me). He can get a lot of raw edge to his voice. Least charismatic? I think anyone who has any experience with Nickel Creek - even a passing glance at the late late show performance - would blow that accusation out of the water.

Meanwhile, Eveline dull? The layers in that are startling!

I try and say that OK this album may not appeal to everyone. Yes, it is more along the veins of Deceiver than 26 Miles or This Side. I would have liked Sean to have lead on at least one other song. But those are my personal tastes that have nothing to do with the overall excellence of the CD. Objectively speaking, it's still masterfully done, even if I as a fan would like more Sean vocals. I'm wondering if this guy is getting his personal preferences confused with an objective review.

Although one might argue that there is no such thing as an objective review.

Well, there are a lot of people that aren't the best singers, but they are still popular and Chris is better than a lot of the singers out there. You are right, he is no Josh Groban, but he isn't Britney Spears either.

[lolol] and thank heaven for that!!

yeah, there are a lot of people who aren't technically great singers, but it doesn't matter because they have a unique style that sets them apart. I guess I should have elaborated more. Chris definitely has the skill...and then he also has his unique raw style which sets him apart. Unfortunately, because his style is rather raw, I think that's one reason this particular reviewer didn't appreciate it.

What must he have made of Deceiver?

Just write him off. There are critics out there who get a bee in their bonnet and they'll never change their opion once it's formed. Should be a lesson to us all.

Chris' strong voice has so much character and yet can pull back from it and blend perfectly in the ensembles. He reminds me a bit of Paul McCartney who could alter his voice to the needs of the song. Not bad company. and that's a great talent. Which of course Chris is - a great talent.
