At a concert I went to a few weeks ago, during the improv section of Ode to a Butterfly, Chris improvised in a section of the Bach Partita. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this (has he done it more than once?) and if anyone has a recording of him playing the ENTIRE Bach Partita. It seems to me that he must've played it at some point, but has anyone ever heard him perform it in its entirety publically? Does anyone have a recording? Someone let me know.

I have a recording of a show a few years ago where Chris works in the Bach partita (I'm assuming we're both talking about the E major), and then segues into the super mario bros. theme! I think I've heard Chris play the whole thing, but it wasn't a Nickel Creek show. They were at a festival doing a guest appearence with John Hartford, and I think John had Chris play the whole thing. It's also kind of sad, because this was the last show John ever played, and he couldn't do much other than talk and occasionally pluck one of the strings on his banjo.
For another great (and unusual) take on the partita, you should check out Bela Fleck's classical album, Perpetual Motion, where he does the partita perfectly on banjo! Between hearing Bela and Chris do it, I've been trying to learn it on guitar, and it's very hard. After about 9 months of working on it on and off, I'm only about 2/3 of the way through!

Amen to that Ken.
Even if you're not into the banjo, I HIGHLY recommend to anyone Bela's Perpetual Motion. And for all the hard core Thile fans out there, it earned Chris his first Grammy, so you need it for your collection anyway!

I've heard the Bela Fleck version, and it rocks my world [noise] I just wish I could hear Chris play it all the way through, too! Then my collection would be complete: Hilary Hann, Bela Fleck, and Chris. Heh, heh.
Has anyone who reads the message board played the Bach? I'm working on it right now, and was wondering if we could all share some pearls of wisdom...
(Yes, Bach Partita #3, E Major)
