God blessed me with an opportunity to go see Nickel Creek on Friday night in Austin, TX.
Standing in the middle of an attentive crowd, I absorbed the moment fully. The cool, dry evening air abided and softly swayed to the sweet strains. The lighting was tastefully appropriate--not overdone. And the music was superb. Chris Thile mentioned several times that we were truly one of the best/biggest crowds for which they'd ever played. Sara said that they really were having a special night. Yeah, right, I thought, I'm sure you tell that to all the crowds. But, true or untrue, though I'd never seen them before, I must admit to you that there did seem to be something special in the air that night. Not only was the music great, but Chris, Sara, Sean, and Mark really seemed to be having a great time. No, really.
I remember the many pebbles under my feet with which I was perpetually playing. I remember looking up into the heavens to see Jupiter along with only a few other celestial bodies due to the brilliance of Austin's glow. As the evening progressed, Jupiter and friends moved slowly across the night sky. Noticing the movement, I was suddenly conscious of a larger perspective. Here we were...free to indulge in this rich mixture of deep bass, playful mandolin, skillful guitar, and fluid fiddle...hurtling through a universe (about which we know next to nothing) on a continent on a planet in a solar system in one galaxy among galaxies. I then thought of the many other people on this very planet who never have had and never will have the opportunity or means to see, hear, and experience such a spectacle. And I was moved. And I am grateful.
