No... I wish I could. It's kinda sad actually. I am from there, I have a place to stay and could even invite them over for a pancakes and cappuccino afterparty... But I'm not going. Even now that I have the funds I'm not gonna buy a 30 dollar ticket to be in row ZZZ.

Plus exams are next week. I will catch them some other time.

I'm there! I've got front row center seats and I'm beyond stoked. I saw them last night in Gainseville too. Amazing show as usual. Sara told me she liked my skirt. Yea that pretty much made my life. Savannah will be my 12th show....I suppose I am a bit pathetic....

try the Holiday Inn near the airport for a room. its $99 and seems to be one of the few places still available. it seemed nice enough on priceline.

hehehe Sara told me she liked my skirt in Atlanta in Ooctober. i still look at the skirt in the closet and every time i wear it and think Sara likes that skirt you're not pathetic.

my husband and I are heading down on Friday for the show! Looking forward to it, although I was not prepared for the hotel situation and am glad we didn't do our usual thing of just waiting until we got down there.

Sadly, even though I am only a quick hop up the interstate, I will not be there...some friends are going though. Have fun everyone!!

This will be my first Nickel Creek show. I was relatively oblivious to the band until recently and my boss gave me what seem to be pretty good seats for Friday's concert. What should I expect?

Expect the unexpected. They are so amazing live that words cannot describe it. You shall be hooked and be one of us by the time you leave the show. Stick around by the bus afterwards as they sometimes will hold a little parking lot jam. I've never ever seen any other band do that. Enjoy!!!! BTW, welcome to the board!!!! Beware of the loonies. :-))

Thank you. I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and grew up listening to blue grass. From what I've heard so far, they are extremely talented and I'm looking foward to the evening. What has impressed me mostly is their ability to hold up live (i pulled a few recordings off real player). That is major criticism with modern bands, so I was pleasantly surprised. My boss and I like similar music and he gave me the tickets. I think I'm in the 11th row of the Orchestra right.

Are most of their fans really young? I'm 26 and I'm wondering how much of a fish out of water I will be!LOL

They draw from quite a range of age groups. You will find the really young all the way to people in their 50's and beyond. You definitely will not be a fish out of water. They usually throw in a few covers, but I won't tell you which ones they are likely to do so I don't ruin the surprise. Also, don't expect traditional bluegrass as they have ventured quite a ways away from that in recent years.

Hold up? Actually, you will find out that their live show is what makes this band. The songs they play in concert will be similar, but not exactly like you hear on the CD. They play them in various different ways and its never the same. In fact, its not uncommon to hear other songs, even Bach, in the middle of some of their own.

And you definitely won't be a fish out of water... I'm 21. I've seen 13 year olds, 50 year olds, and people even bring their toddlers to enjoy the music. People of all ages cannot get enough of Nickel Creek [noise]

You have really good seats! I am jealous. If you don't mind me asking, where do you work? I'm from Savannah.

To the first part, yes. I always check out bands' live performances before throwing money away because so many artists just don't sound good without all the studio magic to clean things up. That is what I love about the Dave Matthews Band. I see they have guested (is that a word?) with Bela Fleck, one of my favorite DMB guests of all time. Nickel Creek seems to possess those same talents, based on my limited exposure to their music.

To the second part, I work at a lawfirm down by City Market and my boyfriend is a chef at one of the local tourist traps on River Street. Were you raised here or did you move here for school/military?

hmmm i am in row R of Orch Right Ctr. which is probably about the same proximity i had for the Columbia Show (prodiced there had been real seats) but MUCH farther away than in Athens...
i kind of enjoy, like i said, a midrange seat beacuse of the sound mixing and such.
and live is always the best way to enjoy NC. CDs are awesome, watching them is even better.
my favourite part is when, somewhere in the middle of the concerts, inevitably, my mind starts to wander for a brief second and then i come back into the moment and realise where i am all over again... yeah. that's fun.

What time should I get there? I'm not going to be able to catch the first act, but I don't want to miss Nickel Creek.

I hope you get there as soon as possible. The Ditty Bops are the opening act and they are great!

Which frustrates me b/c now that they are playing with Nickel Creek again, I can't go see them live.

I just ran into a couple of the band members while I was on my cigarette break. My boss is giving me a hard time because I didn't talk to them. Oh well:)

That is an awesome story that they were just walking down the street near you. You should have told them that you were going to see them later tonight, they probably would have liked that.

I honestly wasn't sure it was them at first. I went upstairs to look at their picture again (they were talking about the last time they did a show in Savannah). My boss's cousin owns the shop they went into and I was going to casually walk over, but the other girl in my office had to go to the bank. Oh well. Maybe I will see them tonight. It would've been cool to get their autographs for my boss since he gave me the tickets. Oops!

I dont want to be the 1st one to comment on the show. I would like to here what others thought of it.

jeremy you cad! making us comment first! did you tape the show? that puts you at even more of an advantage because i had to make a makeshift playlist in shorthand again on the ticket envelope! but this is what i have first off, before personal comments:
When in Rome
Ode to a Butterfly
This Side
Reasons Why
Scotch and Chocolate
Best of Luck
House Carpenter
Ferdinand the Bull
Anthony
Toxic
House of Tom Bombadil>Short People>Bach (i forgot to ask Chris which Bach)
Somebody More Like You (played for the IPA people)
When You Come Back Down
Rye Whisky (there's debate about what the song is called, i'm calling it that)> Smoothie Song
Tomorrow is A Long Time
Hello... Goodbye
Big Sam Thompson
The Fox>Cluck Old Hen
*Encore*
Darling Corey (with Mark on hambone)
Strokes' You Only Live Once (i believe from what Chris said, the first time they played that)
Why Should the Fire Die?

and sadly no bus playing. but that was ok with me, it was for their own sake really. they had a camera crew following them all over the place because of Farmer's Almanac TV that tapes in Savannah. i would be surprised if i end up in some of the footage, the camera guy totally was like an inch from Sean and my face while we were talking.

so as far as the actual concert goes... did anyone else think the sound was total suck for almost the entire first half? i mean all their voices were in really fine form (i was especially impressed with Sean's singing, he was much more confident last night than in Columbia or Athens, he must have had a really good day) but the instruments each sounded for the longest time like they were only coming out of a certain set of speakers. and the auditorium was way too big for the acoustics, they need almost twice as many ceiling panels in my opinion, to make the sound not feel 40 feet to high for the audience to feel. but that was my only gripe, it was bad with the Ditty Bops too. and at least Sara complained about the overly large feel as well. actually that whole conversation was pretty funny (for those of you not there, she and Chris carried on a long conversation about feeling like they should be doing The Nutcracker... and the little ballerina borthers and sisters running out from under the skirt *that was totally me as a child* and stuff). but somewhere around House Carpenter the sound got better and i didn't feel as disconnected.
i was also pretty pleased with how Chris reprimanded those drunken idiots for requesting Lighthouse. i think my favourite part was when he got really into it and said (there was more invovled) 'see we make a set list, and we've slaved over it, and you try to ruin it. when i was young i got to rent ONE movie from the video store, and if i tried to rent two... then i got none. so what if you just ruined all the songs for everyone else now? what if i say no more songs in D? where's your lighthouse now?! i wrote that song when i was 15 and i have loved it, but i will kill my song. and now we'll play a song in F#m because that is so much better than D anyway.' then Sara said they don't usually reprimand their audiences but since they had, they felt it closed the giant gap between stage and seats. and Sara was pretty funny with the drunk guys when she was singing Anthony. i forget what she said exactly... i was too busy trying to remember the Lighthouse rant.
anyway i got absolute chills when Sara sang Tomorrow is A Long Time. i was not expecting that at all. it was wonderful.
and over all my after-concert experience was AWESOME, but i have to work on a paper for school now (i will be a post graduate in 14 days!!!). i will write more about it later.

i was at the savannah show this past friday and i just wanted to drop a line or two about the experience.

first, the ditty bops were utterly charming and a perfect companion to nickel creek. i had never seen them live before, but i plan to try and catch them again. excellent stage presence, superior musicianship and harmonies to die for. i agree that the sound system could have been a bit better, but i was still completely captivated by this band. i bought a couple of copies of their cd and listened on the way home from the concert...words fail me.

and there's a NEW cd coming out next month...yes! what a great way to end the school year (i teach at SCAD and we have one month left to go before sweet, sweet summer).

now, as for the main event...

i had only seen nickel creek live once before (last november in jacksonville, florida), but it was enough to make me a fan for life. i've been buying their cds for years, including chris's solo work, but their live show is just inspiring and virtually a religious experience (like seeing the who in their prime many moons ago).
the drunk guys were soooo embarrassing, but chris and sara really handled them like pros.

i talked a fellow professor into going to the show and we met up afterwards to decompress. he had never even heard of nickel creek before last night...but he's certainly a fan now.

by the way, i bought sean's album a few weeks ago and i can't recommend it enough. very experimental, very pet sounds/smile, and beautifully performed by a gifted musician.

i'll leave the more in-depth analysis of friday's show to others, but i just couldn't pass up the chance to pay written testament to the genius of nickel creek (and them danged ditty bops, too).

i agree aboutt he Ditty Bops. i saw them for the first time in Columbia on the 23rd, and while i had heard little tastes of their music before then, i thought they were a novelty act until i saw them live. now i think they are just about the most perfectthing to complement Nickel Creek that i have ever heard. they're funny, and while all of the music is cute its also very talented and intelligent, and in general they give a good feel to everything. i am a fan. and their new album comes out on my birthday!
as far as Sean's album goes, i love that he said he was shamelessly promoting it now. i told him there was really no need to say 'shameless', since we know he is proud of it he might as well say 'proudly' and he agreed with the Sean-usual amount of self-deprecation. something along the lines of 'yeah well, maybe i should.'
the drunk guys caused me to muse afterwards that i will write one of those 'How Not To' guides entitled 'How Not to be a Concert Goer.' but likey those people wouldn't read it because they already think they are the perfect spectator. oh well.

Yes, The Ditty Bops are the perfect act for NC. They should always open for them or they could share the bill or something. They used to be actors so their stage presence is top notch. I have always said that if were to have a band that is what it would be like.

As for Sean's album, I can't get over how much I am liking it. The more I listen to it, the more i am amazed. There are several television/movie soundtrack-worthy songs on there...and that is not a bad thing.

Between my extreme love of Somebody More Like You and his new album, Sean has actually found a way to make me love him more.

well i looked up Farmer's Almanac TV (for anyone who feels like they might potentially have been on camera, and wants to see how it turns out). it debuts on PBS on May 3rd. you have to look up your local station for times but the ones in Augusta and Atlanta will air it at 7 on Wednesdays. i am not sure which episode will end up having the concert footage in it... but we'll have to wait and see won't we?
