Anyone else catch this show? I'm really crap at reviews so I hope this covers things alright.
I'd travelled from England to see this man play...well granted it was more of an excuse to go to New York but it was kind of the climax and highlight of the trip with it being a day before I flew back. I eventually found this tiny venue and walked in to find people queuing up already. I sat down with a pint and waited for the time to pass. I ended chatting to someone from New Jersey who was hoping to grab a ticket on the night. I'd heard the barstaff telling many people that although there were a lot of tickets being sold there were still some left and to wait for whoever was in charge of the tickets to come in. But as soon as he arrived he'd told people it was sold out which left a lot of people miffed...Jersey girl, if you're readin this, I hope you got a ticket lol. I liked the fact that Chris strolled in through the front door with his mandolinabout 15 minutes before playing. I love that he's not famous enough to have bodyguards round him 24/7 yet he's still a big enough name to turn heads. Anyways, I can't remember much of the setlist but from what I can remember.
A fiddle tune - which which sounded like the inspiration for Ode To A Butterfly, had some very similar licks in it.
Jessamyns Reel - Cheeky little tune which I thought sounded great live, Chris bouncing around with it added some light humour.
How To Grow A Woman From The Ground - the title track from the new album. I lurve this song, very sweet sounding lyrics with a perfect matching melody.
Release Me - Radiohead cover which I think was a part of a melody of another song.
when In Rome - Thile had quite an introduction for this song. He talked about the video and how the lying in the puddle bit was kind of suggested by the drugged up director. Turns out is basicly a puddle of piss that his head was in. He said it was his big rock-star moment lol.
A Bach Piece - this ended with a HUGE round of applause that seemed to go for ages, but Bach seems to be the way to please both Thile and the audience.
Thile finished off with a banjo player from his band and played a song off the forthcoming album. He also confirmed that the bands name would definitely be the Tension's Mountain Boys. They then finished off with a Strokes song which sounded awesome. I've very rarely listened to The Strokes so I don't have a clue what it's called.
Sadly there was another act after Chris so no encore (although the band after him did sound great and I'm glad I stuck around for them). Overall it was a fantastic gig, fantastic music along with funny faces lol. He really shines though when he's with another player and they really bounce off each other. I got to meet him after for a photo and as always he was great with the fans, you just get the feeling he really enjoys meeting them. Before the gig ended he told us that he was playing at a bluegrass jam at a pub somewhere in New York the next night and I was gutted I couldn't make it. The possibility of jamming with Chris makes me grin ear from ear, which was pretty much my fixation for the entire gig.
Oh and I forgot to say, the show was being recorded for radio so keep a look out for it :)
