FYI,
On ebay this week, i found a few This Side advance promo cds on sale!
i bought one myself and the cd is outstanding!
Ack.
The record company and the band's management is very unhappy about those sales, and are doing their best to clamp down on the sellers (there's a statutory $50,000 fine for copyright infringement for selling promo CDs. and selling unreleased promos is particularly evil, in my opinion)
Keep in mind that when you buy a promo CD, you're essentially stealing from the band, because nobody except the greedy seller is getting any financial return on the band's work. At the very least, please consider buying a release version when it comes out :)

I agree 100% with you chip! I work in a music store that buys and sells used cd's and people are ALWAYS trying to sell promos. it really ticks me off [grumpy] and i always turn them away and tell them that they better not try to sell anymore promos in my store. I saw those cd's on ebay and i was soo mad. People who are lucky enough to even GET the cd before it is released and they are using the fact that NC has such a devoted fan base to make a profit off of it!! If I had a promo copy id cherish it...so shame on them!. ok ill get off my soapbox now :)

Yup, I agree... I saw the CD on ebay today... I must admit it was tempting, but I think I'll wait til the release date. It will give me something to look forward [noise] I can't wait!*!*!*!

definitely not a good idea to sell those promos on ebay! you can get your account suspended for copyright infringement and all that! and it is basically stealing from the band and the label. too bad they didnt just keep the promos and pop them in for someone who hasnt heard them before!
and guys really, nc is really on top of their game exactly like another artist i like, peter murphy, he has things taken off ebay all the time! so if you see something like that and you want to let someone know about it, i would do it off the board. just like the bootlegs and pontificating about their personal lives keep it under the table so to speak.
and please dont think im preaching im guilty of swapping boots and buying promos on ebay as well, im just saying keep that stuff low key! ;)
much love!!

One guerilla tactic that anyone who wishes to act on their own can do (Not that I'm advocating it, of course) is to register a new ebay ID and do a fake bid of $1000. This will prevent other bidders from bidding.
When the auction closes, refuse to go through with the sale because it's an illegal product.
If the seller complains, point out that s/he is liable for a serious fine for selling an illegal product, not to mention being busted by Ebay for selling infringing material. Ebay will side with the buyer in this case.

ooooh! chip youre good! ;) i never thought of that one before!! but if we wanted could we just drop you guys a line, or who should we bug if we see something that shouldnt be there? can non bidders complain as well to ebay?!
with that murphy guy, we just write the webmistress and she took care of it for us! (or maybe to sugar hill, like sending holly the link or something?) i dont keep up with ebay enough to see most of that stuff, but i can try to keep an eye out..
chips being sneaky on a friday! i suppose there isnt anyone going to the scots show in dc at the 9:30 tonight huh? :) im just getting psyched for that show and then back to dc sunday for bowie. i know, im a wierdo! ;)
love,

If you want to report any such auctions, email safeharbor@ebay.com ... but they usually don't respond quickly, or put much stock in complaints from other than the rights owner, which is why the guerilla tactic is so effective.

Hi! This is my first post here...Anyway, I decided to email people selling the cd's and tell them that it was illegal. I also gave them a link to this thread....I actually got a couple of people who emailed me back saying that they ended their auctions. So, I recommend trying that before using the Guerilla tactics.....But, bidding 1000 bucks and not paying does sound like fun....:D
