View Full Version : Uninspired performance at Telluride Bluegrass Festival

The most anticipated set of the whole festival was unfortunately a let down as Nickel Creek played a forgettable set list.

Songs NOT played:

1. Jealous of the Moon
2. Helena
3. Why Should the Fire Die
4. Can't Complain
5. Best of Luck
6. Doubting Thomas

Songs they chose to play:

1. Anthony (did they throw Sara a bone with this?)
2. The Fox (how many times do they have to play this at Telluride).

Overall, a lackluster performance.

Of course, I love the band. But even heroes have a bad day.

Got lucky the first time to see them.Saw them 2 days in a row.Different venues. All I heard twice was Anthony, and the fox. Can't hear that enough. They use the fox to break in to another cover song, then end with the song.600 mile drive all together though.Hoping the same this Sept.

Maybe you were unimpressed with the NC concert at Telluride, I enjoyed it. It was similar to there Rochester NY show. But, did you attend the Thile Night Grass show at the Sheridan Opera house in Telluride that evening. Truly this was one of my most unforgettable concert experiences as Chris invited all of NC on stage, Edgar Myer, Molly O'Brien, Mike Marshall, David Grier, Bare Naked Ladies and the list goes on... Totally obscure pieces I have never before heard in concert. It wouldn't have ended if they weren't closing down Telluride for the night at 2:30 am. It was their end of the festival party and I was lucky enough to be there for it!

I doubt they'll ever play WSTFD live. Ever.

And then they used it as the final encore (around the single mic) for many (if not all) of the shows on the fall tour.

Really??? How many times have we seen them in the past year? 2 or 3? Haven't heard them do it once. Wierd.

I wonder how many times I've seen them do WSTFD live? I think they may've done it in Minneapolis, but if not I know they def did in Seattle and then Sioux Falls...so 2 or 3 out of the past 4 have included the song...decent ratio. And everytime they play it...my heart stops and if I find Chris I thank him for writing it...hahah

They played WSTFD on almost every show last fall as the very last song of the night. I saw them do it at all 5 shows that I saw. This spring it looks like they've been opening some shows with it and occasionally playing it at the end during the encores. They seem to be giving the song a bit of a rest at times.

I wanted to go to that so badly.

Did they play Green and Gray?

If they did, I don't care what else they played. I've seen them twice and they haven't yet.

Well don't you all just suck. [grumpy]

Just kidding kinda. You know, like when you go to a birthday party and the stupid kid gets everything you never got when you were that age.

If it makes you feel any better I've never seen them play Eveline, Hanging By A Thread, Seven Wonders, Beauty and the Mess, the Hand Song OR Robin & Marian live (and I've wanted to hear them all played live since forever)

Ahhh...the consolation prize...as I've heard Beauty & the Mess about 8 billion times live. :D

i'd have to agree that it was one of their weaker performances but the Sheridan Opera House was great!

Considering it was a bluegrass festival, most of the songs you listed don't exactly have the bluegrassy feel to it... They played songs that appealed to the particular crowd. As a musician or any type of performer you learn sometimes you have to. It's not about necessarily changing as an artist but sometimes some things work for one venue and not the other.

I think NC are incredible but the last couple times I've seen them perform it seems like their energy is way down and their interaction with fans after the show was indefinately strained.
In fact, some of my friends at Telluride experienced first hand, and I quote, Rude- rock-starish behavior from one of the members who was hanging out in the town during the BNL set at the Festival.
...any insights?

I'm not sure what it would take to inspire you at a Nickel Creek Concert, but we just left the Grand Junction concert and it was far and beyond the quality and electricity of their last visit. (Which by the way was incredible) (the parenthesis are for you Sean) ;-)

Chris, Sara, Sean and Scott posses more talent in their respective little fingers than any one of the critics I've read can muster.

Chris gave me a new perspective on Bach...Awesome!

WapitiSmith,

Awesome you saw a great show at Grand Junction. Guess what? My post was about their Telluride Bluegrass performance.

I wasn't making a general statement about the band's talent. I just was bummed that the Telluride show was kind of a letdown. I wanted to them to play their material from arguably one of the best albums released from the last 5 years (from ALL GROUPs).

To put it another way, I wish I was at the game in which Babe Ruth called his shot rather than the game in which the Bambino struck out looking to end it.

They closed with WSTFD in a one-mic setup at their St. Paul show.

Can't wait to see them back here again on Harriet Island in a few weeks!
