Never heard of Lollapalooza, one of the biggest festival concerts ever, created by Jane's Addiction, and since has (apparantly) been turned into a big joke compared to what it used to be, or this particular event?

Yeah...the punchline of the joke is...I get to hear:
Nickel Creek, Panic! At the Disco, Stars, Ryan Adams, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf, Feist, Calexico, Gnarls Barkley, The Dresden Dolls, The Flaming Lips, Thievery Corporation, The Redwalls, The Frames, Andrew Bird, The Shins, Of Montreal
...all in a span of 3 days! Isn't that hilarious! Assuming these are the only bands I get to hear out of the 130 that are playing, that means I'm only paying $7.39 per band with my $140 ticket. Hahaha...HYSTERICAL!!! Not to mention it's giving me a 5 day weekend, it's in Chicago...possibly my favorite city, and the weather is forecast to be beautiful in the mid 80's with a nice breeze a good mix of clouds and sunshine! Gonna grab me some Gino's East Pizza while I'm up there too!

It's a joke in the way Woodstock '99 was a joke. For the organizers, it's no longer about the music. Just like any other huge concert event, the bands are used to get sponsors & ticket sales. The current form of the festival was not what Perry was going for. That's all i'm saying.
Did NC cancel? I'm at the concert's website now and NC is not listted on the set list. On NC's website it says NC is playing at 2:30 on Aug. 6th but on Lollapalooza's it has Ben Kweller playing then and doesn't list NC at all. I was going to try and watch it live. Bummer.

I'm going with NCFreak on this one. Maybe I'm just old and cranky, but I can be a purist from time to time. Just like I find it ridiculous to hear punk on the radio, taking Lollapallooza out of the PAC-NW, taking the grunge aspect out of it....somehow cheapens it. Much like Woodstock '99. There was no relation whatsoever to the first Woodstock other than location.
On the other hand, I agree. The bands there are good (well, a lot of them. I tire of emo after about 3 seconds) and I would watch NC, Ryan Adams, Wilco, etc...and they are good prices. I'm just basically raging against the machine of the industry and being a purist.
*EDIT*
I just noticed you said Thievery Corporation is going to be there. I would LOVE to see that show. Let us (me) know how it is!

Nickel Creek's set was prety good given their restricted 1hr time allotment. They played lot of their more up-tempo songs, and suprisingly a lot of instrumental breaks. Most of the fans at the front were already waiting to see Wilco, but were won-over by the amazing music by the end... anyone know how the crowd reacted further away ?
Theivery Corporation was great, as were The Volient Femmes and Ween on Friday... but Manu Chao was probably the best performance I saw all weekend.

Sadly, NC wasn't on the webcast. Wilco's performance was great as usual though. I agree about the festival not being about what Perry originally intended it to be, but the lineup looked quite diverse and I can imagine it was a good time.

I wasn't actually there but I have a story. I've been telling my friend about Nickel Creek for five years now, only to be met with yeah, sure or I heard they're bluegrass, and that's not my cup of tea
But then on Sunday (two days after NC was in our hometown of Peoria) I get a call from her, that went as follows:
Hey, it's me, and I'm just calling to say that while I was waiting for Wilco, I actually saw Nickel Creek, and I remember you liking them, so I thought I'd call and rub it in. But anyway, I don't know if you've seen them live or not, but I totally recommend seeing them, because the're pretty much AMAZING! Um, yes, I know, sorry for not listening to you earlier...k'bye

There are some thumbnail pictures of NC at Lollapalooza at wireimage.com. You can search on Nickel Creek and see all the NC pictures they have or you can look for Lollapalooza pictures (day 3) only.

Here is a link to some pictures from Lollapolooza courtesy of WXRT once again. There are 3 pics of Nickel Creek amongst the ones that are posted here. I'll set it to the 1st one and just click next to get to the other two.

Unfortunately, this takes you right to the start of the pics. For those of you who just want to see the Nickel Creek pics, the last numbers in the link are 18266, 18267, and 18268. If that's too confusing, just scroll through and you will eventually get to them, but you have to get through Friday and Saturday's pics first. There are a lot of good ones of some of the other bands too.
