I really want to hear the originals to Chris's covers. I've herad Heart and Dead Leaves, but i wanna hear HTGAWFTG, Brakeman's Blues and Wayside.
anyone heard 'em, or know where they are? That would be awesome if you could say.

Well Wayside is by Gillian Welch (I think I spelled that wrong) but she does it REALLY slow. Personally I think Chris's version is way better.

Brakeman's Blues was a Jimmie Rogers song. HTGAWFTG is by Tom Brosseau. He used to have it on his myspace page, but it is no longer there. Maybe try his website. He streams music there as well, I believe.

i won't argue it, it seems to be the current popular opinion, i will just say that i think Chris tries to cram too many words into too short a musical span. he even drops words here and there to make it fit the frenetic pacing. the slower works better lyrically in my mind.

I shall officially go on record as saying that I like Chris' version of Wayside/Back in Time, but I think that Gillian Welch's version has a better feel to it. I like the way her version moves along slower because you can better feel the longing for this other person. It just seems more powerful this way. Not picking on Chris' version as he obviously wanted to do something different with it. I like his too, but Gillian's version to me anyway is way better. That's just my two cents worth.

I highly recommend taking time out to listen to Tom Brosseau's version of How to Grow a Woman From the Ground. Anything by Tom Brosseau, really. :p
(edit: you can find HtGaWFtG on the Empty Houses are Lonely CD. and the discs are worth buying as his prose is lovely as well... interesting at the very least)

..and if you find you like Tom Brosseau, try and find some Will Oldham as it's very, very similar. He's an extremely talented songwriter.

Last time I checked Tom had HtGaWftG on his myspace, if people want to listen to it there...

^ I listened to HtGaWftG (gosh I hate that acronym) and I do like it.
However, the White Stripes version of Dead Leaves is awful in my opinion.
One question: Did Chris write any of the songs on the album? I thought he wrote 11th Reel but I may be wrong.
