View Full Version : Grow a Band > Nickel Creek?

Just have to check the pulse here...
I've been a Nickel Creek fan since I was lucky enough to see Lighthouse Tale running on CMT one night, a long time ago.
I've seen them 4 times live... and each time I was in total ecstasy to see so many of my favorite songs (and others) played with such beauty.
I was actually so disturbed that they would break up, after I heard that I refused to listen to the CDs (only lasted 4 days... well... 3)...
When I finally gave in, and started listening to their CDs again... I gave Grow a Woman from the Ground a good listen (as well as Sean's newest, Blinders On) for the first time... Hasn't left the changer for months now.
Based off Chris' new CD and all the online performances I've rounded up (new At&T one's are pretty sweet) ... I've arrived at a crazy thought...
Chris' new band may be even better than Nickel Creek... (check out the Ophelia clip if you don't think he has any vocal support in the other band).
No offense, for real... I wish Nickel Creek would never break up and Sean, Chris, and Sara could pursue solo/other bands at the same time.

I think you're completely right. Chris's new band is talented beyond belief. I enjoyed their show more than I ever enjoyed a Nickel Creek show (though I didn't think that was possible!).
Look at it this way:
All 3 musicians in Nickel Creek are spectacular. Now we have 3 times as much music to listen to of them and many, many more albums to look forward to!

With that in mind I am kind of excited about the break up because I thoroughly enjoy each member's different personalities that they present to the band, but they've been a group for so long and one of my favorite bands and that is something that is hard to let go of. (as a fan of course)

The three from Nickel Creek solo are enough to get me excited way beyond any new NC release.
Just based off how much I've loved Sean and Chris' solo work -- I'm pretty excited to hear Sara do some solo work as well (not to mention, how well they can do finding the absolute best artists to surround them like Chris and Sean have done so well).
I feel so damn lucky that I was a Nickel Creek fan from the early days -- cause now, every time they do some sort of solo effort... I feel like I have been a part of the ride.

I am incredibly excited for everything that is coming 'round the bend for Chris, Sean, and Sara. However, I don't think I can honestly say that their latest projects enthuse me as much as the greater whole of Nickel Creek. Am I still a huge fan of the Watkins Family Hour and The (soon to be) Tension Mountain Boys? Of course. And I'm sure I'll love whatever Sara and the Real Seanjon put out into the universe. But by that same token, I doubt I'll ever find anything quite as blissfully arresting as the music Nickel Creek has given all of us.

What's great about the band growing is the experience they'll get from it.
I think it's fantastic. Nickel Creek has such an amazing sound with the three; the growth of the band will only make it that much better...
not that they need it... :D

love the tensions mountain boys! such energy! such musicianship! taking on the world!
I don't think its fair to compare the two bands. they are two entities. Nickel Creek brings so much that TMB doesn't, and vice versa!!
I'm glad that both have existed.

I agree...two different bands. Both great in their own way.
I saw NC at an album release party in Boston for WSTFD last year. I doubt anything musical will ever top that experience for me.
But seeing Chris with the new band they were obviously having a lot of fun together. And it was a different feel than a nickelcreek show. I am going to see them again in a couple of weeks, so I will see then if the honeymoon phase is over, or if they are still having a lot of fun.

From what I've heard, the Tensions Mountain Boys are going to be very different from the How to Grow a Band. Gabe Witcher recently sent out a message on myspace alluding to Chris' through-composed masterwork , the debut performance of which will be at the March show at Carnegie Hall. Doesn't sound very bluegrassy to me, but it does sound potentially very good.

HOW COULD YOU!?
But really, with them being able to do more solo stuff rather than always touring with NC, we get three times the shows, and three times the albums! I'm just looking to the bright side.

Nickel Creek was the best live act I'd seen until the How to Grow A Band. Chris just raised the bar. These guys are talented beyond belief, and you may not agree until you see them live.
