I thought each of the movies managed to be crude, racist, and revolting without being particularly humorous at all. There were some comical parts, I admit, but most of them were used in all the AP movies and as a result came off more than a little trite. I saw Goldmember with a friend and we only laughed at the people in the theatre (thoroughly amusing) and at ourselves for ever having a twinge of desire to see that movie. But all my other friends loved it! Has anyone seen Signs?

How were the Austin Powers films racist, exactly?
I saw Signs. I liked it, but wanted something more. The end was pretty disappointing for me.

Yeah, I get the crude part (that was what made it funny to me) but I don't get how they were racist!

The jokes against Goldmember. He was what, Dutch? I don't remember. Anyway, I know the jokes were meant to be taken lightly, but racism is something to which I don't think we should be desensitized.

Huh?!? Dutch is a nationality, not a race...at least in the society.
Why not be desensitized? Why not ignore it all together. Race has no biological significance. It is a purely social invention. So, basically...race does not exist. It's made up. It means absolutely nothing. To be offended is to believe in the existance of race. To identify oneself or another person as a member of any certain race is pointless, and many times destructive.
I'm not saying racial jokes are okay. I'm saying that to be offended is a watse of mental anguish.
Jus' sayin'.

Those films got worse, the first one was only mildly funny. I can't say I found them racist though...goldmember was terrible! i've seen/ started some pretty good food fights in some pretty bad films but that one tops the lot. I guess that says it all.

I have never thought of it that way NCFreak! I agree with you though!
And I personally thought that Goldmember was the funniest one yet. But that's probably because I can practically recite the first two by heart and I've only seen Goldmember twice.

i thought they were funny
and we try to lighten up on our past racism hates by making jokes, so every race can laugh together
i completely agree NCFreak

thats ironic that you say that ncfreak...i'm taking anthropology and i just learned that yesterday...about the race thing how ppl think it is supported by science when it is just really social....sorry..i know this was unnecessary but just wanted to say...cool...did you take anthro too?
chris <><
oh...i have never seen any of them and...from the reviews..i really don't want to....it is just something personal. i hated hearing sexual innuendos (sp) over and over all through school..so i really don't want to now....

No Anthropology, just Sociology. Actually, I'm getting a minor in Sociology, w/ an emphasis on 'American Minorities.' For some reason, Anthropology just isn't very interesting to me. However, I LOVE Sociology. Weird, huh?
Hooray for Sociology minors!! Is it a bad sign that I'm doing better in my minor than in my major? Something tells me it is. Goldmember was lame and I was pretty preturbed about the Signs. However, I'm no longer afraid of aliens, so maybe that's a good thing. [alien]

Whoa!! Me too. Now, what would REALLY freak me out is if your major was Theatre Arts.
I can't believe I have so much in common w/ so many people on this board.
Actually no it's Psychology, but I think Soc is so much more interesting. Everytime one of my customers asks my major and I say Psych they're all, Riiight. I'm going to be a banker who understands the root causes of why my customer keeps overdrawing his account (Psych view-he's depressed because of a chemical imbalance, Soc view-he's in a lower socio-economic group and is being held down by stereotypes). At least I know I'm not wasting four (or five or six) years of my life!! lol
