I love a good hip-hop beat. However, I'm SICK of the bling-bling!! Sure, name recognition is important, but as soon as I hear or see Murder Inc. flash across the screen, I turn back to CMT.

i like the old school rap stuff. i'm not really in to the new stuff. i'm all about salt n pepa (i don't even remember how to spell it) and fresh prince!! and the older r&b stuff is pretty good too, but once again i'm not liking all the new pop stuff.

more replies than i expected!!!!
a lot of the old school is good, but i still like some of the new stuff....the culture is being corrupted......it used to be about how creative a way a rapper could say he was the king of hip hop, now it's just about lust and killing people and racism....what happened!?!?!?

I wholeheartedly agree with you spaz.... I'm an old school fan too and it used to be friendly and funny lyrical competitions (kind of one-upsmanships) amongst rappers... but now, it's all about violence and degrading women as objects, etc... (check the videos). I'm not saying that there's nothing good out there any more, but just that today's music has really gotten away lyrically from old school rap's purpose - fun.
What about Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Run-DMC, Sugar Hill Gang (now THAT's old school), etc.???

Point taken, Majestic.... I guess I wasn't real clear in my earlier post. Truthfully, Public Enemy's music is not usually associated with fun , but I am a fan of them and their music. :)
I guess when I said fun, I meant when it was just starting up in NYC and places like that. The Sugar Hill Gang and groups like that were all about the good times and fun.... and just like any other music genre, as it becomes more exposed and popular, different sects of rap began to develop and branch out.
Another theme of rap that began then and continues today (somewhat) is talking about life as they see and live it - like Grandmaster Flash's The Message, etc...
I guess in a very jumbled way, that's what I was getting at.... :D
