I actually took up the mando cause of Chris. That was about 2 1/2 years ago. Guitar I had already played cause of dad. I wanted to learn to play banjo, but it looked sooo hard, but I saw this guy in a high school band play at a bluegrass festival near me a while back and thought if he's a teen and can do it then so can I.

I already knew how to play guitar, but thanks to sean I gotten back into jazz and flatpicking as well.
As for mandolin, I played it once for a jazz band contest. My teacher had one laying around and I picked it up and started playing along with the rythem section, and before you know it, the band joined and we were playing one of the songs that we were getting ready to play for the Rose Festival Jazz Band Classic (only the top 7 bands in Idaho, Montana, Washington, Utah, and Oregon get to play at this competition). My director wanted me to learn the chords and a solo to play it at the competition.
I didn't really get into it until I heard Chris play on thier 1st cd. Then I really got into it and bought my own.
THANKS CHRIS!!
-PJ-

P.S. I played at the comp. and we won. :D

Hi Katiekind,

While I can't say that NC inspired me to START playing mandolin...I can say that they are what has inspired me to keep playing it. Without Nickel Creek, I would have quit long ago. That's why I liked their first cd so much. THANK YOU NICKEL CREEK! (And especially Chris)

I'm pretty sure I had already started learning to play the fiddle when I started listening to NC. It seems like they both came along at about the same time. NC has definitely helped me to keep wanting to learn and play though.

I didn't start playing guitar because of Nickel Creek, but their music has definitely inspired me to keep playing. I started a few months before I heard the the first cd, and though my abilities are pale in comparison to those of the band, I do try. :)

well, considering I bought my guitar before I heard of NC and it's now collecting dust-no. But they make me wish I had learned when I was younger. Oh and my guitar is not collecting dust because I don't want to play it it's colelcting dust because I can't bring it to school becasue I can't afford to buy a case-sad, I know. :-)

I've been wanting to learn to play the guitar, but it's so big! (I'm only 5' and I have super small hands) So, after watching lanky Chris playing his teeny tiny mando, I decided to play that instead! So, yeah, I guess NC inspired me!!!!

I bought a guitar about 5 months ago and I was just getting really frusturated, so I stopped. But after becoming a Nickel Creek fan, I started again, and I have been practicing everyday for an hour. I love Nickel Creek!:D

I have been so inspired by Chris, that I traded an electric guitar for an acoustic\electric mandolin, & have been trying to teach myself for nearly 2 years now. I have the Chris Thile Video, & recommend it to anyone.

Watching Nickel Creek has made me want to learn to play, but I really don't know.
I don't own an instrument, and I want to play the guitar, but they are sooo expensive. [sob]

At first I was thinking 'well, I'm so small, so I can't' but then I see Sean playing so well. He's about three inches taller than me, so that's not too much of a difference.

I have! Sara is my fiddle idol so I've taken up the fiddle. I wanna play the mando sooooooo bad, too!!! I've tried the guitar, it wasn't to my liking probably it was an electric and my dad won't let me go near his acoustics! Darn! lol Anyways...it's all good!

P.S.- I'm wired!!!! I don't know why!!! [bang] :-)) [party] [noise] [shock]

Yes they have inspired me to start playing music again. I used to play the piano, and wish I had never stopped my lessons(if I hadnt stopped i would have been playing for 12 years now! [sob] ) But b/c of Nickel Creek I decided to get back into music. I got a MANDOLIN for Christmas and I love everything about it, even the protective callouses that are forming on the tips of my fingers! ;) Just b/c I'm playing the mando, doesn't necessarly mean Chris is the only one that inspired me though. They all did, I think especially Sean. i tried the guitar but it's just too big and akward for me, so I decided on a mandolin. They are all just so talented and inspirations to keep playing and strive to increase you skills. I could listen to their music forever, and their solo projects just blow me away!

I want to play the mando cause of Chris and he makes it look so easy! I already play the guitar, but I really wanna learn how to play better. the fiddle is something i'm dying to play. From what I've heard it is really really hard to play, but I still want to try! [shock] :D

I'm in the process of begging my dad for a mandolin. I suppose you can say I was slightly inspired by Chris, but other mandolin players had a part in it too. I just love the way it sounds. Daddy said he's going to get me one after he talks to a guy we know at church who has one and can teach me to play, but if it goes like most things my dad promises, I'll be 26 when I get my mandolin. *sigh* I'll buy it myself.

I might be able to take up the fiddle. If my father had mentioned it before I knew about NC, I probably would have said no, thanks. I heard NC and fell in love with the mando and the fiddle (guitar is okay). Well, let's hope I can do this....*(starts playing fiddle, bow hits someone in the head)*.....oops, maybe i shouldn't do this....

I would love to play an instrument, and my interests have grown especially since ive started liking Nickel Creek. They make it look fun, and for some reason intelligent.

If i told my mom i wanted to play the mandolin, i dont think she'd take me serious. Oh well, i guess ill just live out my dreams through my kids someday.

I took up mandolin because of nickel creek. I already played guitar, but nickel creek opened up a whole new world of folk, celtic, bluegrass, ect. for my playing. Thanks Nickel creek!

It is great to hear that Nickel Creek's music has inspired so many people. I have played the flute for 17 years, but now I have a bad craving for a mandolin!!! Anyone else play a flute and a mandolin?

It's going to be alto saxophone and mandolin for me. I started saving up recently. I'm $30 closer to having a mandolin than I was. I'm not willing to wait on my dad. But I figure that soon I'll have enough saved up to buy a pretty decent mandolin to learn on and as I get better I can buy a better one.

I was inspired, in part, to pick up the guitar because of Nickel Creek. My thoughts were these: Music is such a beautiful form of self expression. Many times, when a certain mood strikes, I really want to hear a particular song. It's ridiculous that I have to turn on the radio or pop in a CD to do that. So I decided to learn to play an instrument, and I started with guitar because it's fairly basic and a key part of many songs. Nickel Creek inspired this in part because I LOVE their music and Reasons Why is one of my favorite songs ever. (It's a toss-up between first and second place.) That song is just amazing, and too often fits my mood. And so, I've got a guitar sitting across the room from me that I unfortunately haven't had much time for in the past months. (But now I am out of school and have NOTHING to do.... sounds like an ideal time for some guitar to me.)
But for the record, I would really LOVE to play the fiddle someday, I think it's my fave.

I think I posted here once, but I have to make an update. I got a mando back in October mostly because of Chris, and now that I have the basics down, and feel comfortable playing, I have gotten a fiddle!!! I am really excited. I still am working really hard with my Mando, but I am quickly becoming obsessed with that fiddle. It's so much fun, and I can only play E, F#, and G!! My biggest problem is this: my bow keeps wanting to jump up and bow on the strings. I don't understand it, all I know is that I have to keep stopping and wipe the rosin-ey mess off. Oh well, practice, practice, practice!!

small hands here...I have had a guitar for a very long time...I almost dislocated my wrist trying to learn it..and sliced several fingers...
so I have kind of quit the thing for now...but about 3 months ago..I tried to pick it up again b/c of NC...but I broke several picks and almost my pinky...oh well...I have thought about getting a Mando...b/c of my small hands and Chris...that would make things go easier

I started guitar lessons a few months back! And I plan on taking a class in writing lyrics for music! They are a huge inspiration to me. They're young, and so talented!:)

I come from a long line of hill-billies. However, my mom and dad moved into the big city (Omaha) and we got away from our roots. I got my granddad's fiddle when he passed away a few years ago, but I never picked it up until I started listening to NC.

Also, I have been saving up to my a mando and since I just had my birthday (26!) I now have enough cash . . . anyone have suggestions as to what I should be looking for?

FuManDraco- I didn't know playing a guitar could be so dangerous! When and if I finally ever purchase a guitar...I hope I don't have the same luck!:(
