View Full Version : Sara vs. Alison Krauss

Bart Simpson

I was standing in line a couple of days ago to buy a new cd at a record shop near me and I couldent help but over hear the conversation that was going on behind me. They stated that Sara form Nickel Creek had a much much better singing voice and it was more angelic then Alisson Krauss! What are they thinking! They could not be more wrong. I think that Alisson has a much better voice then Sara. Now Sara does have a very nice voice but I think it is in no way even comparable to Alissons. Does anyone else feel this way?

I think it's kind of a toss up. They are both equally good to me. I just think that it's funny that Sara is being compared to her producer and idol.

My opinion Sara is a BILLION times better than Alison. I can't stand her... I don't know why though. But I have given her a fair chance and just don't like anything she does.

Allison's voice is a sun beam shining down on a dewy morning.

Sara's voice is the delicate, shimmering light that glistens brilliantly off of a tiny rain drop; gently resting on the softest of rose pedals just after a shower on a cool, spring, Sunday morning.

Am I making my point here?

I gotta agree. They both have beautiful voices, and each has its individuality.

I particuarly like the subtlety and versatility that Sara can bring forth... the difference between, say, Speak and Think About Your Troubles

I was watching a housemate's video on Ella Fitzgerald last night, and it sort of renewed the sense of awe I've always had for Ella's extraordinary talent and versatility. While scatting isn't Sara's style, I think that one could reasonably draw some comparisions in terms of the diversity of style and intensity, as well as the velvety smooth quality that both have.

And, as the voice teachers at Oberlin used to say, women's voices often don't mature to their full richness until sometime in their late 20s or early 30s, so I'm guessing that Sara's voice will be even more amazing a few years from now :)

Bart Simpson

If I was say stuck in Cuba and Fidel Castrol had me a gun point and told me that if I didit bring him the most beautiful voice on the planet he would blow my head away. If would immedietly call the U.S and say bring me Alisson Krauss and hurry! And if Alisson was busy and couldent come and they then offered me Sara I would have to decline and take my fate like a man.

I just wanted to put in my little, tiny opinion on this conversation (not the one about dating moms...). I think that saying Sara is better than Alison is like saying Mozart was a better composer than Bach. How do you compare the two? Sara and Alison are equally talented and equally individual musicians. ***

creekster_anna
09-04-2002, 02:36 PM
I agree that you can't really compare the two. For one reason, Alison is older and more experienced. For another, I always hate to compare people's voice's b/c it all depends on personal tastes and preferences. And, in this case, yes Sara and Alison's voices are similar but they each have unique qualities too. I really love both their voices for different reasons.:)

At the risk of this conversation dragging on too long (sorry Chip!!!!) I just wanted to point out something. Do you all realize how cool it is that you can stand in line at the CD store and just hear people around you talking about Nickel Creek? That means they are pretty popular and that is way exciting for them! Just thought I'd put that in. ***

wow...i wished i lived someone where, where i heard ppl takling about NC in line...or just talking about them at all.....

and NCfreak...

after re-reading your post on the comparison of alison and sara's voice..i think you should cut out you opinion of sara's voice and tell it to her like the next time you see her at a concert and something...i'm sure you are counting down the days (but there is nothing wrong w/that if you are..b/c i'm thinking about doing it too! :D ).
who knows..i'm sure she would find it flattering...one more way for winning her over...

I agree with the first part of The gooses post...do you know how aggravating it is to be up in my house for an hour listening to NC and then go outside and have someone drive by with Eminem blaring? no offense to any Eminem fans out there, it's just an aggravating thing that happens ....

I am going to have to recant my previous statement.
I am definitely going to say that Sara has a better voice than Allison (only by a little though) after hearing Sara sing Be Thou My Vision last night.

hey joce, i just try and give it back...i just turn my bass low (b/c at the loud volume setting i like to play it at..the bass kills my speakers) roll down my windows and turn up the creek. i figure if they can play their music why can't i? (obviously noting though any sound laws....i could see someone from here getting a ticket for playing NC too loud from their car..now thats a fan) plus..i think it is cool to hear NC playing from anyone else's car as they drive...makes me think i'm not the only one out there...

I agree there about mr ncfreak there. That comment would have been much better than that hotdog thing ;) lol

Ha now my 2 cents.

I think that Alison and sara have very angelic voices. But Alison has that mature sound to hers while Sara's is still 'fresh' if you will.

I am shocked that they were even mentioning sara's name b/c she's not known as Alison. So thats good. Ha movin on up!

Hmmm...good idea. I think it would be best written inside a card. That'd be easy to give to her. Only bad thing is that I have NO idea when the next time will be. They're coming nowhere near here (Omaha) until who knows when.

But seriously, i brought my mother to the last show, and i was taking pictures like mad....and my mother approaches me during the break and says Um, is that a whole roll of film of Sara? What about the rest of the band? To this, I replied: What? There are other people in the band? Needless to say, she got quite a kick out of that comment, then gave me the You are sooo pathetic look....

Ah, the joys of being single in my mid-twenties...

Extreme honesty here, Allison's voice is angellic... Sara's voice is holy... I would love to hear either voice singing me to sleep... Allison has proven herself in the singing business... Sara is getting there (in my opinion)... Sara has a wholesome appeal to her ... Allison has a totally seperate appeal... Sara just seems like a great girl who loves her fans, and the whole star thing is still catching her off guard, which even makes her more appealing because of that innocent, and humble attitude, those attitudes and looks will get her places in life, even if she decides she doesn't like the social pressures in star life... she just appears to be an angel to those of us that think we are experts on other's lives, when we truly have no real authority on this topic, the truth is that being a star, others see you as infallible, or as a complete fallacy, and with Sara, it appears that everything she does or says becomes infallible, only increasing people's desires to hear more of her... well at least that is my opinion, take it for what it is worth... and by the way, whatever smile it is that she did, whatever the motive behind it, it got people to totally adore her, and it worked... I love it...

They both have tremendously beautiful voices. Seems so clear why NC & AK have the mutual admiration thing happening.

I must admit that I tilt a bit in Alison's favor though. Perhaps it simply because I've been a fan for so long and there's a much bigger body of work to hear. I also love her taste in songs! Looking forward to her live CD which is due out very soon. Amazon has it posted for a Nov. 5th release - double live disc! Will be great to hear the magic of her shows in the privacy of my own home!

i wasn't going to grace [lloll]this forum with a post because i don't think that it is really cool to compare and contrast and then RATE these two devistatingly talented women's voices.........BUT having said that......i grew up with alison. she will always be the highest on my list no matter what. when i hear her voice, my ears perk immediately and i get all excited and my heart soars!!! now i have only been aqquainted with sara's voice for about a year and a half. i think sara's voice is special and beautiful but a completely different experience. i don't think you can decide who is better. it is as if alison's and sara's voice exist on completely different plains and you just cant' do it. like one is a pear and the other is an apple, their skins are similar, but different and the insides look the same, but taste different. i don't know.....it's hard to put into words.

Well I must say that both Alison and Sara have superb vocal skills and violin/fiddle skills. When it comes to comparison it is a matter of taste. Alison and Sara are friends you have to remember so you shouldn't cut one down. They are both excellent and that should be left at that.

I am a 43 year old male and know Alison and I can tell you emphatically they both are equally talented and have equal chops vocally. You may personally prefer one over the other
because they have stylistic differences. That is OK. Style is based on limitations John Hartford Mark Twang. I have been in the music biz for 34 years and I certainly don't know all, but I have seen and heard a bunch.

I honestly can't pick between the two. Of course I love Sara. She's amazing. Duh. But anyone who's seen Alison Krauss live will understand why I just cannot decide. She was absolutely amazing, and she makes it seem so effortless. She just stands there and sounds like that. I love her.

In all seriousness I do prefer Sara's voice to that of Alison's, (please reverse that if I've posted this on an Alison Krauss forum by mistake):p
The material I have heard from Sara has been IMO more vocally diverse than that of the material I have heard of Alison.
