Well, here's my attempt:

Why should the fire die?
My mom and dad kept their's alive.
It's early yet, don't say goodnight.
I know you're tired - you'll be alright

You're shining still behind the clouds, saying I won't figure you out
It might be true, but let me try, and try, and try for the rest of my life.

I'm not scared of being alone.
I'm not scared of being alone, being alone.
I'm just happier being confused beside the fire as long as it's with you.

Why should that fire die?
My mom and dad kept their's alive.
It's getting late, she says goodnight, and falls asleep.
I'll be alright.

I hope I didn't completely butcher it. Corrections welcome...

-Brett

I can't hear the words to "SCC" either. And "Anthony" isn't sad at all. It's hilarious. Especially when you watch the look on Sara's face when she sings it.

yeah Anthony is never a sad song. i always kind of picture how it is in cartoons when the girls with literal stars in their eyes chase the boys who try everything short of dropping an anvil on them to get them to go away.
when Sara played it for us last time, she played it outside afterwards and then when she was done she said "not that i have ever done that or anything" and then made a very silly face. title=Big

It sounds very... not exactly sad, it would be I guess, if I could take it seriously lol. The music is so interesting, and the lyrics so straight forward that I can't really see the girl in it crying or anything.

Yes! Like the cartoons, where the boy can say flat out 'No' and the girl just thinks he's playing hard to get.

Basically, on the line which goes, "But I think he can, " just imagine Sara with a completely straight look, yet with an ever-so-subtle smile on her face. That's the feeling of the song right there. Nutzoid-psycho-stalker girl and her true love.

Here you go!

CANíT COMPLAIN

I made her smile and made her cry
Cleared her head and made her wonder why
I helped her live and made her want to die
But she canít complain
She canít complain

She tried to date a friend of mine
I was at his house when she came to say goodbye
He stood her up and she took it as a sign
And I canít complain
I canít complain

We took off for the weekend had quite a time
Shared everything weíd ever try
I told her I could love her I told her I could lie
So she canít complain
She canít complain

She didnít care if she saw me in her life
I left it up for her to decide
She couldnít see the end but neither could I
So I canít complain
I guess I canít complain

She moved here bought the first house she could find
I moved in we locked ourselves inside
I guess we just kidnapped each otherís minds
So we canít complain
We canít complain

I cheated on her with a friend of mine
There are no days when we donít fight
But remember, I warned her and Iím a guy
So she canít complain
No she canít complainÖ

Speaking of lyrics, can someone clue me in on "Eveline" and "Best of Luck"? I can understand every other song except those two. In fact, I'm not entirely sure if I really even know what "Best of Luck" is about at this point - I have a vague idea after catching a few of the lines and the chorus.

Okay, here's what I've got for "Eveline." You know, I've listened to this song from Watkin's Family Hour shows since at least a year ago and I just recently figured out that it was about James Joyce's "Eveline" from "Dubliners." I know people have mentioned that, but I guess I'm just that thick. Anyway, knowing the story helps with the lyrics quite a bit, but there is still way too much slurring to be sure! title=Wink

EVELINE

Eveline, grips the railing as her lover calls her to the sea
'Wonít you sail with me?'

She canít hear (.) just a step away from happiness
(Ö) drives her crazier

Eveline, take care of your father, I cared for you
Words her dying mother spoke kill her too

Eveline stays here.

so are lyrics aren't allowed to be posted? I can't remember anymore. But if they are I would be interested to see what any of you come up with for "Best of Luck." I've most of it but there are a few parts that I'm unsure of.

Good deal. Ok now I can ask guilt free....What are the lyrics to "Best of Luck" ? title=Smilie Well I tell ya what I've got so far.

Don't touch, don't look.
Don't think, best of luck.

She tried as hard as she could,
but he knew it wasn't good enough
and wouldn't ever be.
So she had to start hiding how she felt,
but she loved him and he knew it.
And if his hands weren't tied
he would have really like to help her.

Don't touch, best of luck.

He's still shaking it off
buys flowers for his wife.
Guilty he could even think of other girls (?).
Home looking like he's seen a ghost
she's ready for the worst
but when he tells her she breaks down
Crying I'm so sorry.

Don't touch, don't look,
don't think, best of luck.
Don't touch, don't look,
don't think, best of luck.

He really wanted her forever (?) in high school.
In college I call every day till the day I met you.
A year ago we got in touch, I asked him to forgive me.
It should have ended there, but I forgot I wasn't eighteen.

Don't touch, best of luck.

She'll try as hard as she can, but he'll know it isn't good enough.
And won't ever be.
So she'll have to start hiding how she feels.
Though she loves him and he knows it.
Still his hands are tied even if he wants to help her.

Don't touch, don't look,
Don't think, best of luck.
Don't touch, don't look,
Don't think, best of luck.

Ok, nevermind...maybe I don't need the lyrics. I just hadn't sat down and listened to it as closely as I just did...lol. But there are a few places that I'm a little iffy so if anyone has any suggestions let me know. title=Smilie

Who wrote She Can't Complain and Best of Luck? Sean or Chris or a combination of the two. I know I read somewhere wheyre they all wrote things together for this album. I am not sure...

i believe Chris said once when i saw them, the first time i heard SCC, that it was non-biographical, but was basically something of a story of the way he feels like most "normal guys" (read- jerks that make up a large percentage of the population) treat/feel about girls.
which i guess, comparing the lyrics to guys i know with the WORST female track records... i would say so.

I don't think the girl can be left out of that equation either tho... I mean, come on... LOL you KNOW you know girls like that who hear what they want to hear and end up in awful situations. And they stick it out waaaay too long waiting for the guy to change into somone he likely never will... it's sad, but seems to be fairly common.

Jerk guy (and I most CERTAINLY don't think that's a majority of the population LOL, but the bad ones DO tend to stand out I guess) plus emotionally dependent, insecure woman equals complete misery for all.

Least that's my take on it, tinted with what I've seen many others go through.

TRUST me i know the girls are part of it too, most of those girls have been my friends at one point in time. when that characteristic emerged, the friendship slackened. i can only hear about people who willingly let other people walk on them, for so long.
and i never said majority, i said LARGE part. anything over 15% is a large part, and i think the jerks are about that much if not more (especially the late-highschool/college set).
anyway the gist of my previous post was, the lyrics are not about anyone in particular, just about a certain set of situations that are all too common among people today. and i wasjust repeating what i heard. title=Big

I've got a few things a little different on my lyrics for Best of Luck. The first line that you had questions on I had
"Guilty he could even think of life without her kids,"

And then down a little ways this verse:

"He didnít want to love her in high school, at college I call every day until the day I met you, a year ago we got in touch. I ask him to forgive me. It shouldnít have ever happened, God, I wasnít eighteen."

I also thought that it was "Don't touch, don't look, don't peak Best of Luck.

I can't tell if it sounds like don't peak or don't think. Either sound right...

As far as Evilene goes I had

She canít hear it, just a step away from happiness
Sanity blurs, and drives her crazier

Don't know if that's right or if any of that helps, but those are the differences I had.

Chris wrote She Can't Complain about a female friend or acquaintance of his and her relationship with this guy. He said this from the stage at one of the shows I was at back in late 2003.

Where can a sick man go, when he cant choke donw the medicine the old doc knows?

A specialist, he came to town but he stays at home saying "No one knows, so I dont Honey, when in rome"

Where can a teacher go, whenever she thinks people need the things she knows? Hey those books you gave us look good on the shelves at home, and they burn warm in the fire place, teacher, when in rome.

Grab a blanket, sister, we'll make smoke signals, bring some new blody fears, like we're alone(Sounds like that) Grab a blanket brother so we dont catch cold from one another. I wonder if we're stuck in rome...

Where can a dead mand go? A question with and answer only dead men know. But I hope that they never really feel at home if they spent their life time learning how to live in rome.

Yeah, I got the same thing, only thing I heard differently was:
"we'll make smoke signals bring some new blood, it feels like we're alone"

"a question with an answer only dead men know"
"but I'm gonna bet that they never really feel at home..."

i think you know, watching the video and seeing the lyrics- the last verse definitely has political undertones- a very strong statement. it actually gives me goosebumps.

i love how passionate this band is!

Hey guys, I'm having some trouble with the lyrics for Helena...this is what I have come to understand the lyrics as:

Helena donít walk away before you give me back my heart
If it were mine it would be yours to take
Iím sorry I let down my guard, oh Helena
You looked so sweet, I should have seen
Well, I was playing for fun
You were playing for keeps

You win, I lose
Is there someway you can leave me in your dead (??)
so my girl and I can live to die another day
On that that day I wont forget you Helena

You look so sweet waiting for me
While I wait for her to give me any reason to leave
Donít waste your pretty sympathy
Sheís gonna be just fine
And Helena so will we, and so will everything in time

Helena donít walk away
Did you hear one word I said?
Oh well, I never really liked our tender way(??)
And I forgot her, Iíll forget you Helena
Youíre not that sweet and neither is she
Go ahead and tell her anything you want
Cause Helena guys like me never sleep alone at night
I donít need your sympathy cause Iíll always be just fine
Iíll always be just fine
Yeah, Iíll always be just fine

I think I'm quite set with everything other than those two lines with the question marks, but all corrections are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here's what I've got:

You win, I lose
Is there some way you can leave me in your debt
so my girl and I can live to die another day
On that that day I wont forget you Helena

Helena donít walk away
Did you hear one word I said?
Oh well, I never really liked talks anyway
And I forgot her, Iíll forget you Helena

Is there some way you can leave me in your death
So my girl and I can live
To die another day.

I hadn't caught the "talks anyway" though, thank ya

Haha! I was actually a little unsure about the "talks anyway" part, but I'm pretty sure that the word is "debt" because you can be indebted to someone, (not "indeaded," lol!) and "debt" rhymes with "forget" two lines later.

Yay for fixed "Eveline" lyrics!

But then doesn't the next line sound weird? "So my girl and I can live to die another day" ?
I dunno, maybe I'm completly off the wall lol

Perhaps it sounds weird, but I can't think of anything else that it could be.

Thanks to all for the clarifications of the lyrics! I totally see how they work better than what I had.

I'm trying to think of a way to explain this. Okay, so the singer led Helena on and he doesn't want her to tell his current girlfriend "anything she wants" about what he's been up to. If Helena doesn't tell the girl, so that the singer can continue his relationship and break it off at some later date, he'll be indebted to her - i.e. he promises to remember Helena when that day comes. So he says.

Does that make any sense at all? I guess that's just the way I've been interpreting it.

I am telling you...all of these lyrics, they are like poetry! Really good poetry! But the problem is I was never any good at interpreting what poems mean. Can anyone help me figure out what "When In Rome" means.

*sigh* I feel really helpless when I listen to a particular song over and over and I just cannot pick up on a few lines of lyrics. Presently that song is Doubting Thomas. I must have listened to it a hundred times already and there are two lines that are frustrating me to no end. Anyone willing to help a poor girl out?? I just need the end of these two lines.

"Will I discover a soul saving love or just....."

Yeah, I have no idea after that.

And then:

"If thereís a master of death I bet heís holding his breath..."

I somehow hear 'I shall oblige and tell the dead abotu his power'

::whimpers:: Help me please title=Smilie Thanks all.

Really? I interpreted it less politically and more along religious lines, actually. "When in Rome" is usually followed by "when in rome, do as the Romans do."

"Where can a dead man go/ a question with an answer only dead men know./ But I'm gonna bet they never really feel at home/ if they spent a lifetime learning how to live in Rome."

To me, the first answer people would think of for "where can a dead man go" would be Heaven or Hell. Only the dead men truly know, though, of course which it might be. But if the dead man has spent his entire life learning how to "do as the Romans do" and live for this world instead of another one, Heaven won't exactly feel like home.

Interpreted religiously or politically, you're right, there's no denying how passionate this band is!title=Smilie

dangit. i tried posting a response and now its making me type all over again.

so in reading your response a few times it makes more sense to me- i think your take may be more accurate.

i think when i saw the video and heard the last verse i remember seeing a figure from the military.

"Where can a dead man go/ a question with an answer only dead men know./ But I'm gonna bet they never really feel at home/ if they spent a lifetime learning how to live in Rome."

it reminds me of an 18 year old that has inlisted and is learning how to live in unfamiliar territory- learning how to fight- learning new culture- learning how to survive. in hearing that it makes me think of an 18 year old who's life is really just beginning and how they may never really feel at home if they are overseas fighting a war...

i don't know, just an idea. it may be that whoever directed the video had that vision, too.

nonetheless it is a kickass song!

Politics and Religion have never been so merged as they are in today's current events. This song I believe emphasises that point.

The first verse exposes us to a dying man whose doctor can't help him and the Specialist won't help him - very much an attack on medicine for profit.

The middle verse about the teacher and books (that isn't Sara is it? title=Roll ) states the books look pretty on the shelves or warm us in the fire - certainly not a good picture of where we are in terms of condemning teachers and books these days.

The last verse talks about being "stuck in Rome" while showing soldiers bandaged, saluting, holding their guns, yet as described - dead. My feeling is that when you go to "Rome"/Iraq and you fight as they fight, you might get stuck there.

That's my feeling mind you. I realize their religious beliefs are always there and the dove flying from the old man upwards is distinctly a nod to Heaven.

that's great! See, I hadn't even thought of it with a war perspective until seeing the video. Leave it to Nickel Creek to use music videos to further entwine songs with multitudinous interpretations!

This is why I hate poetry! There are too many interpretations! I think the song, like all poetry, means different things to all of us. Which makes it very hard when you are studying poetry in school and you fail a test for your "interpretation" of the poem being wrong!

But after listening to the song over and over I think it is more about religion. How Christians need to seperate themselves from the world. Most people today only know how to live in the world or "in rome" and don't know about what God wants us to do.

Who know???

This is EXACTLY what I thought the first time I heard that lyric -- which is one of the reasons I was surprised at the "where are the Christian references" criticisms. Maybe Christianity specifically is not being referenced, but I think there are many religious/spiritual themes in this album.

I didn't mean to criticize any Christian references and I said that I thought that the idea that it was a spiritual reference was very much a possibility.

I just wanted to share my idea about how I felt when I first heard it with the video.

"I think the song, like all poetry, means different things to all of us."

I agree with this. I love the fact that songs and poetry could mean different things to all of us, simply because we are all different.

What I really appreciate is sharing new ideas and takes. Because I will hear and see different things when I hear music. For instance "Reason's Why" I had no idea that it was a spiritual/religious reference. I thought it was a love song- I also thought that it was a take on people's reasons for certain behaviors.

Like say..being mean to someone. when i heard the line "other's have excuses, I have my reason's why" I immediately thought maybe this person thinks they have a good reason to be mean and they aren't making excuses- or whatever decision they have made.

does that make sense?

hearing other takes on this song makes me think differently. i really enjoy that. i prefer it to the more "black and white" song where it's like....okay......thanks.

You shouldn't have to necessarily believe the song has only one interpretation. The great thing about songs are they are open to interpretation and your meaning doesn't have to necessarily be right or wrong. Well written songs can have many different layers and mean many different things depending upon what the listener sees/feels in them.

Good point. Try telling that to your English teacher...
