The Complete List of Non-Album Originals/Covers

I'm really frustrated and confused by NC's decision to release Reasons Why. For a band that prides itself on the integrity of its releases, it's a pretty big slap in the face to their loyal fans. 2 live tracks from a show which is already in wide circulation and a dvd of videos with absolutely no bonus features. Big Deal. I would have assumed the videos would have been bonus features as part of a live dvd extravoganza or soemthing. Anyhow to alleviate my frustration a bit I've been going back and listening to all of my Nickel Creek music, including some of the tracks we should be getting treated to with this retrospective release. All this reminiscing has really got me wanting a complete list of every song NC has ever been known to play. I don't ever recall a list like this having been attempted before, so please feel free to add and or elaborate on what I've got so far.
I'm just going from memory here to start with.

-originals

Pfft. It's a greatest hits collection and nothing more. It's not claiming to be a retrospective

Re: Re: The Complete List of Non-Album Originals/Covers

still, we're talking about a greatest hits over 3 albums. if you were contracted for a certain number of albums, and you only had 3 under your belt, I don't think a greatest hits release would be the wisest choice for a 4th (possibly final?) release.

It would be if you wanted to take a break from the other band members and not risk losing them as friends.

It's been stated elsewhere that the Sugar Hill contract was 3 albums. But regardless, it seems clear that the band has no intention of recording any new material before they go their separate ways.

And I have no specific knowledge of this, but it's my guess that it is Sugar Hill who desired to release this collection, not so much Nickel Creek.

understood. I wasn't talking about recording new material so much as I was talking about releasing a full live show or some tracks that were already recorded but never released. I remember reading that they had recorded over 30 tracks for possible inclusion on WSTFD. I don't think it woudl take too much effort to package these up, or to release an entire concert. I can understand it a bit more if it was Sugar Hill wanting a best of collection, but IMHO it just doesn't feel right. Especially when much of the Best of Nickel Creek happens live.

I know somebody mentioned Chris had said they wanted to do a live DVD from their upcoming 2007. That would be very nice, but I would still love to see an official release of an earlier show, particularly something spring of '04ish. If the band is not interested in doing such I can respect that, but I just hope they realize there is a demand for such material out there.

Wow that's a really long list, thanks for that.

I had no idea they covered ''Yellow'' by Coldplay. I'd love to hear that.

Many versions of Lighthouse circa 2003. Like Telluride 6-22-03, Cleveland 6-11-03, Jannus Landing 5-13-03.

Another Lighthouse medley song:
Milk - Kings of Leon

Oh wow - they did the 'Milk' medly in London last year and it was so, so amazing I forgot to breathe for pretty much the entire thing. I can't even describe it - it was the single most incredible thing I have ever heard and I would actually kill for a recording (you guys are safe though - don't worry!). Is it on any live tapings?

Sorry to double post but they did 'Omaha' by Counting Crows in Council Bluffs, Iowa back in June. I don't think anyone has mentioned that yet.

What are the chances that among the whole lot of people here, that there's bootlegs of all these tunes that could be compiled into one big zip file?

Without that, there's no chance of ever being a NC completist!

I have a recording of a show where while they are talking to/with the audience they start discussing the song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald and then they play part of one of the verses of the song.... Not sure if this counts or not though.

You don't have to be so sad. You can buy the Merlefest Live DVD and see and hear them perform it with Doc Watson on stage as often as you like.

I certainly wouldn't mind undertaking such a task, granted we are allowed to do such a thing over the message board. to comply with the recording policy, once the tunes were collected we could trade via B&P. Anyone have an objection to such an endeavor?

Nitpicking: You Don't Have To Move That Mountain is on Here To There. And I don't think they've ever done All I Want or Sir Duke without Glen leading. Sail Away has already been mentioned.

I think the best way to go about compiling these songs is for me to just collect whatever people have and make a master list.

Now, while I do have a fair bit of NC myself, I am far from having a complete collection. Unless there is someone else with a more complete collection willing to do this, I am going to need help in compiling all the songs. I know this sucks, but people are going to have to snail mail me all of the songs I don't have. If you want this to work its going to take some effort. This could very easily fail if nobody helps, but I think its something most everyone here wants. Again if anyone else feels they could tackle this project with less effort speak up, but otherwise lets see if we can get this off the ground. If you send me something, post what you are sending me here so others do not send the same thing. If anybody wants reimbursement I'll be glad to send a blank cd in return.

What follows is a list of the songs I don't have or think we should find a better quality recording of. If you have any of these songs, regardless of the quality, please send them to me. Try and include any information you have about the song (original artist, date of recording, etc.) as I'll make a txt file with any information we have about the songs.
Postmark them to me at:

Brian Kidd
100 Waterfront Dr.
Colonial Heights, VA 23834

I'll try and keep my list updated so you know what we're missing. Once I get as many as I think we are going to be able to collect from this board, I'll give out some information about trading.

originals:
Pop Genius
Honest Men Make The Best Liars
We're Closed
Frontline
Lighthouse pt. 2
One Man's Horizon
Tendencies Human
Scared
True Stories
Alive
The Riddle

covers:
Girls Just Want to Have Fun (w/ Gillian Welch)
I'll Fly Away (w/ Gillain Welch)
Tell It To Me (OCMS)
Up on Cripple Creek (The Band w/ OCMS)
Helter Skelter (Beatles)

Omaha (Counting Crows)
Texas Red (Strength in Numbers)

I will not be including taxman, as its available on telluride 30th anniversary compilation

You do realize that Nickel Creek's recording policy prohibits the trading of live performances online. Any trading has to be done via regular mail as a B&P and limited to no more than 2 at a time. Just thought I'd pass this along as a reminder.

Almost. Files cannot be sent via email either. They must be traded via regular mail only. More work, but worth it in the end.

I think we should be good to go now. Time to see if this is going to work.

Oh and Temperance Reel and the there was a tune that they did after Drone in between the Fox, but Mark plays the banjo on it. It was an instrumental. I have it on video, but I can't hear it very well.

I think this is a really great idea. I'll pull out my shows and see what I can contribute to the cause... it's been a while since I've listened through some of the old ones but I know I've got a bunch. I'll see what I can throw together and drop in the mail. Thanks for putting this together.

some of the songs listed I know have been done for Watkins Family Hour, lets try and keep this list to songs done strictly at NC shows.

I just watched Bluegrass Journey , and they have Nickel Creek playing a song, Old, Cold Coffee on the dashboard

From the title and music, it sounded like a Thile/Creek composition to me

Just another song to add to the listtitle=Big

They did it at House of Blues Anaheim in August 2006 when I saw them last summer. It was really good version too :-D

Did they ever cover a song by John Mayer called Tori? Or did they write it with him because a friend of mine told me that it was by both of them and they played it together but the song was just John Mayer and I did a search and John Mayer and Nickel Creek were listed together so I didn't if they wrote it together or just played it together at some point.

I'm not EXACTLY sure, but I'm guessing Tori is just a John Mayer song. If you search peer-2-peer networks like Kazaa/Ares/Limewire for this song it will come up as John Mayer with Nickel Creek.

I believe it was just a mistake by the person who uploaded it and it's been circulating through the internet like that.

I know I'm missing some.....title=Confused

I've seen them play What Ever Happened (The Strokes) with Chris singing the lead.

Has anyone mentioned the theme song from Alias? They used to start the Fox off that way.

Copland's Rodeo Hoe Down in the middle of the Fox in Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City the first time. You might know this as the Beef theme song.
